Indian PM To Resign On May 17 — Official
Agency Report

— May 8, 2014
Indian Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, is to resign on May 17, after being at the helm of the ruling Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government for two consecutive five-year terms, official source said on Thursday.

Report says on the eve of demitting office, which is the day the election results will be announced, Singh will address the nation in a farewell speech.

The prime minister had in January said at a media meet that he would retire from politics after the results of the general elections were out.

“India is in the midst of general elections, which began on April 7 and will end on May 12, with results due to be out on May 16,’’ it said.

Opinion polls have suggested that the main opposition, Bharatiya Janata Party would form the next government, with Narendra Modi as the prime minister.

Report says the Congress, being led by Nehru-Gandhi Gandhi, is facing its worst ever defeat due to its inability to tackle corruption and inflation. (Xinhua/NAN)

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today announced that he will resign taking full responsibility for the party's dismal performance in the Lok Sabha elections in the state.

"I will submit my resignation to party President Sonia Gandhi taking full responsibility for the party's performance in the state," Gogoi told reporters here.

"This is not an emotional decision. This is a temporary setback. I have seen such a situation before and the party has always bounced back," he said.

He recalled that Indira Gandhi had lost in 1977, but bounced back to power and became the Prime Minister again with the Congress forming the government at the Centre.

"In Assam, too, such a situation had risen earlier with the Congress account once being zero in 1986...Such storms do come and Congress knows how to fight back," he said.

Asked whether Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi should resign taking full responsibility for the party's debacle, Gogoi shot back, "Why should he resign? He is not the Prime Minister."

Among the 14 Lok Sabha constituencies in Assam, BJP is leading in nine constituencies, ruling Congress and principal opposition party AIUDF in two seats respectively and an Independent in one.

Gogoi's son Gaurav Gogoi is trailing in third position behind BJP's Mrinal Kumar Saikia and AGP's former MP Arun Sarma in Kaliabor constituency.
