Indian PM defends spending on space exploration

NEW DELHI: Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Sunday defended spending millions of dollars on space exploration despite many people in the country living in grinding poverty.

India plans to launch a probe to orbit Mars next year at an estimated cost of four to five billion rupees ($70-90 million), and hopes to send its first manned mission to space in 2016.

“Questions are sometimes asked about whether a poor country like India can afford a space programme and whether the funds spent on space exploration, albeit modest, could be better utilised elsewhere,” Singh said in a speech.

“This misses the point that a nation’s state of development is finally a product of its technological prowess.”

India comes 134th among 187 countries in the United Nations’ overall development rankings, while a survey earlier this year revealed that 42 per cent of Indian children aged under five are underweight due to malnutrition.

Singh made his remarks in Andhra Pradesh state after witnessing the launch of India’s 100th space mission when a rocket carrying two foreign commercial satellites was fired into orbit.

“India is justly proud of its space scientists, who have overcome immense odds to set up world-class facilities and develop advanced technologies,” he said.

In September 2009, India’s Chandrayaan-1 lunar probe discovered water on the moon, boosting the country’s credibility among more experienced space-faring nations.

But the space programme suffered a setback in December 2010 when a satellite launch vehicle blew up and fell into the Bay of Bengal after veering from its intended flight path.

.
Simply, India wants to be a "multi-talented" guy amongst the world community..

So, if we r bidding for UNSC then we should have such technological advancement so that no trolls can say that India doesn't have its own space industry..

@Underlined part

hmm....

Looks like some media outlets from across the border were too eager to put forward "United Nations’ overall development rankings, and malnutrition stats due to obvious reasons and are having difficulties in understanding that every PSLV launch of foreign satellite by ISRO (Antrix commercial wing) will bring in $20 Million into its account.

This news report comes from a nation's media who itself has nothing to show as far as space exploration is concerned, i m sorry to say but this news report appears to be jealousy.

Nothing new, actually it is happening for quite sometime with India, each nation which itself is economically & technology saturated is again & again raising questions on our space exploration & the budget it gets (don't know what bad deeds ISRO has commited :D).

.
He shouldn't have to defens sh!t- it is India's money it can do what the eff it like's with it! India is doing damn well on poverty alieviation, far better than almost every other similar nation. Space exploration also adds a lot- it provides jobs, it provides education, it gives citizens ambition. Also in ISRO's case it the commercial side is being devloped which offsets much of the costs.

Yes, but he had to defend that because there are more people opposing the ISRO's budget in India itself than in other countries. I sometimes laugh at the shortsightedness of the people, they only know that ISRO spend $1.3 billion on it's space exploration & people are dieing of hunger. They don't understand that ISRO save more Indian money than it spends. They don't think that it is because of the communication satellites (which can costs many millions more if ISRO does not build them in India) that people in India are staying connected & have knowledge of what is happening in other parts of the country through electronic media, they don't understand that it is because of ISRO's effort that telemedicines, better agricultural help, better connectivity of the villages has become possible. They even don't understand that it is because of ISRO's RISAT satellite that India's borders are better protected & another incident of 26/11 can be avoided thus saving precious lives & property.

Gandhi? I thought it was Robbie Williams!!

lol!!

don't worry mate, in India we have copied entire music, song or even films, why a problem in a quote than

In democratic and open system we have to tell the world what we r doing and justify. Good thing PM took chance and did it.
