Indian navy's Project 17-A

P-17A will be the ultimate ship for Indian navy. I will be happy if they go for larger Swordship type ship from DCNS. With one billion+ per ship I think they can fit lots of weapons and sensors.

Some other ships around the world... many of these ships were in bid for P-17A..... Shipyards from SK, France, UK, Italy, Russia and US received RFI... DCNS with a new ship based on FREMM is the most probable winner...

P-17A must look better than these..... should be in the line of DDX or Swordship... :cheesy:

Mate what do u mean by many of these ships were bid for P-17 A.
I thought it was an indigenous warship just like the Shivaliks.
Care to explain..?

Brother there is no relation between P-17 and P-17A. P-17A will be a complete new ship. RFI have been sent to French DCNS, Italian Fincantieri, American firms Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman besides shipyards in Russia and Korea to manufacture the frigates.

DCNS cleverly tied up with GRSE to form a JV to win the tender. But now MDL and GRSE will divide between them the entire order for seven frigates. Though MDL will start the construction first, GRSE will be the main designer of the ships. So I called DCNS as front runner. The JVs will be mainly for learning the techniques of modular construction of the ships. Both MDL and GRSE will be ready for modular construction of ships from mid 2011.

India already building her first carrier with modular techniques.

ok so the RFI were just for design techniques and consultation./.?
Not the entire ships..?

I think earlier Navy's request was to get 2 warships made by bid winner in their country and construct the rest here in India by ToT for modular design technique to have early delivery and fast ToT even if it cost more to Navy. But later it was decided to construct all the warship here in India only by Indian shipyards.

Guys my main query is.....IS it a Indian Ship just built by foreign shipyards using modular techniques OR Is it a foreign ship itself jus like the MMRCA..?

Thx

This was a 'bit' like MRCA. these ships are floow on to the P17 and will be made in India by GRSL and MDL.

A total of seven vessels is projected in this element of the program, with the Indian Navy having issued an RFI (Request for Information) in late 2006. The RFI has been issued to numerous European and Russian shipyards, with the plan involving the first vessel to be built in an international shipyard and the remaining six vessels to be constructed in India itself. The Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) in Kolkata or the Mazagon Dock Ltd (MDL) in Mumbai is expected to be the national shipyard, where the remaining six vessels will be built.

The RFI was sent after an analysis that Indian ship yards are not advanced enough as the navy was looking for "La Fayette " type of ship. So the first vessel will be bult in international shipyard with the rest in India after the TOT.

But later the DCA decided that all seven ships will be made in INDIA.

This is the only class where Lockheed martin has proposed "Aegis" combat system.

Hope this is clear now..

P-17 A ships have the same hull from P-17 but the superstructure will be from bidding countries with TOT and it will be made in India by MDL and GRSE.

Does anybody knows about the delay in P17 project ?/
" Project 17 was approved in 1997, delivery of the first Shivalik class ship is only expected in 2009, thanks to construction delays and other hold-ups. " And as we all know that P17 only has 5 frigates, while in P17A 7 frigates will be made.
Now what a normal Indian like me would interpret from this ? Is there any indication when the deal will be signed ? P17A is already delayed.

I have read at many places about the number of ships and subs under construction for navy "Indian navy 2022". Now i have doubts about these plans. And with the delays going on in the production navy is becoming more and more vulnerable. Lets pray they are able to achieve there ambitious plans.

Sorry for late reply!!! ;)

Actually the foreign company will work with IN and Indian shipyard to build P-17A based on their current platform. They will mainly work for design techniques and consultations as you said.

india needs all these ships and fast iwould personally be in favor of building 30 destroyer like capability frigates at $ 800mil each....=us $ 24 billion.nothing else is required

So, Navy experts any news on P-17-A..I like the looks of Swordfish the most..
La Fatteye looks cool too..
