It's not 'massive' as you say. It's just the camera angle! In fact the overall height is less than a Boeing 737-600. Here...

Not much difference except in the length. For 737-700 - Same except length 33.63m (110ft 4in), height 12.55m (41ft 2in). For a 737-800 the tail height is 41 ft 2 in (12.5 m) which is the same as a 737-900.

Yes, it's also pretty big and the location with all the other parts looks not as good as on the C130Js:

But as long as it does it job.

Incredible! Boeing only started the manufacturing of this plane a few months ago! But a over a year's worth of testing seems unusual (Q3 2011-Q1 2013) perhaps Boeing is to use this model as the test bed for all P-8I and a "prrof of concept" as the P-8I for IN differs significantly to USN's P-8A.

Keep in mind that the Boeing 737 is not a new aircraft, but is serving even in IAF (Air force one / VIP transport) for years, only this varient is new, so the aircraft itself doesn't need that many changes, or tests.
