Indian Navy May Walk Away From French Missile Deal

That's already the result of a competition, where the MICA VL was found to be the best base for a development. So unless we made a mistake in the earlier evaluations, we most likely chose the L1 right?

No, I do not think that it was a result of competition. Since they have a high degree of competency, they were selected and no competitive bid was floated.

6 bn dollar is a DRDO budget for 3 years. You want to spend that on a 15 KM tactical missile system?

Invest this 6 bn USD on development of electronic and other military stuff. You will witness a see change in research.

Hold on your horses bro.Why you need Maitri, when Akash SAM is online ?

Because both are different kind of SAM systems, for different purposes or aims. Maitri is a quick reaction SAM, comparable to the SPYDER SAM that the IAF has ordered, to work next to the Akash SAM

Wrong , Maitri is a QRSAM which indeed is short range ! -
Livefist: India Begins $2.2-billion QR-SAM Procurement Effort
Shtil is old design with no VL and in medium range catogary. That's why Indian navy choose Barak 8.

Maitri is suppose to be a very similar to mica vl missile which is around 100kg.(trishul missile was 130 kg)
The Telegraph - Calcutta (Kolkata) | Nation | Junked: France joint missile plan

You don' t have to be a genius to understand different categorys.Akash is a medium weight/range missile with no seeker,no vl,no qr capabilities and what IA/navy want is short range ,least weight ,active homing ,vl,qr and trust vector.

Am saying that the role of QRSAM is now effectively done by AKASH. IAF got Akash SAM with few Spyder QRSAM. It's not looking to spend for unnecessary JV. While IAF now even asked for Akash Mk2 with semi active seekers onboards with longer range.

@ image form livefist...Any SAM below or equal to 15km range is tagged as QRSAM,so the image which you posted is something doesn't goes well.
Economics 101 lesson:Why to spend $6 billion dollar on so called JV,when you already got a home grown solution worth $5.2 billion with few Spyder off the shelf from Israel catering IAF and IA in huge nos. While Indian navy recently got approval to buy 262 batch II Barak1 worth Rs800 cr($146Million) and that's more than sufficient for another 5years-10years.

That's my point is ,6 bn dollar for so called tactical missile, while it seems IAF discovered Akash can also play this role effectively, with Spyder as back for some important strategic asserts.

. .
come to think about it
Both IAF and Army feel that they dont need Maitri because Akash supported by Spyder will do just fine
Navy on the other Hand has a requirement of only 30 QRSAM systems valued at estimated 2 Billion USD
Without the Army and IAF their is no point in spending 4-6 Billion USD
Barak 1 system which currently equips 19 Frontline Warships will remain in active service till 2030 , thats because Indian MOD ordered 262 Barak 1 SAMs this year and which are to be delivered by 2016
Navy plans to equip 30 frontline warships with a new QRSAM starting with Brahmaputra class frigates which are due for MLU in 2016-19 and The Delhi class Destroyers which will begin MLU in 2017-22
Vikramaditya too is supposed to get a new QRSAM when it goes for its first maintenance in 2017-18

So in my opinion it is better to buy SAMs off the shelf for the navy coz they dont have the economies of scale of the IAF and the Army
which have together ordered 500 Akash Launchers and 8000 Akash SAMs
Compared to the Navy which require 30 Launchers and 640-900 SAMs

If France refused to sell the LHD to Russia then will IN going to buy it.
India is interested in acquiring 4 LPD/LHD for the navy
And Mistral class is one of the contender for the order
However India is unlikely to purchase the ship meant for Russia coz this might spoil our relations

As i said IAF don't want Maitri because they have spyder.

QRSAM is not a SAM with below 15km range, It is a SAMs with response time 6 seconds or less (from launch
command for missile to launch of missile).

Currently ordered barak 1 is for already ordered ships and upgrades (14 Indian warship including vikki) not for future navy.

Army have requirement for QRSAM + SRSAM which it self will be 2000+ missiles and all future naval vessels require maitri.
So, your Economics 101 is wrong.
Akash can never modify to fill there gaps, period.

The Army RFI is issued on june 2012 and Apr 2010 because talk started in 2009 with France was not progressing well.

I know India is too poor to buy Rafale... but too poor to buy even a missile?

Sensing loss of Interest from Indian side for proposed Joint venture on Co-Development of SRSAM – surface to air short range systems. French have roped in Main stream Indian media to push for deal . idrw.org had reported few days back that IAF has walked out of the Project and Indian Army which also has similar requirements are more interested in direct purchase and Indian Navy which has been using Israeli made Barak-1 has a stop gap measure already has placed orders for its Re-supply of missiles for its diminishing inventory .

According to ET, French Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian recently wrote to Jaitley to expedite signing of the contract for co-development of SRSAM and has promised better transfer of know-how and technology. Talks of co-development of SRSAM with French has been going for last 8 years and All three services has joint requirements , but IAF recently preferred Locally developed Akash SAM Systems over this project and Indian Army is tilting towards BAMSE SRSAM jointly offered by Saab and Ashok Leyland to meet Indian Army Short Range Surface to Air Missile (SRSAM) air defence programme.

BAMSE SRSAM are being integrated with the Ashok Leyland Super Stallion 8×8, a high-mobility vehicle capable of operating in all types of terrain under all weather conditions. The complete SRSAM system includes the GIRAFFE AMB, a powerful 3D surveillance radar and command and control system intended for short and medium-range ground based air defence and the BAMSE MCC missile launcher with six ready-to-fire missiles.

maitri is junked

IAF going with aakash
Ia too going with aakash
IN can carry on with barak 1 - till new developed

french tired to get thier way by delaying, delays cause urgency, in urgency a lot of demands will be dropped by indian side

in the meantime aakash came online - so france lost the business

and if we dont buy- why should it affect relations with france

if we have our own product we will not buy from france
