Russian news agency RIA Novosti quotes a Russian Navy Staff Admiral confirming that a K-152 Nerpa attack submarine will be leased to the Indian Navy by October 2011. The quote was made with the condition of anonymity.

Previous reports had indicated that the submarine was already delivered to India. However now it appears that an Indian crew is undergoing training on-board with Russian instructors.

"The submarine is completely ready for transfer. An Indian crew is currently training aboard with Russian instructors,"

"This should be completed before October: We're running late as it is,"

I heard our future SSN might be based on Akula, is it true ?? If yes, then why we are so intended to go for a 3rd gen sub while Russia is starting to work on 5th gen ?? Its better we join them.

.
How many nerpa submarines are we going to lease with buy after option??

.
The Nerpa is a beast...we need to make it as a base for our future SSN programmes. I can't tell more than that.

Shchuka-B rocks.

Nope...the Russian navy is depleting and moreover they are impressed with the K-152...I dont think they will be selling us any. It is the Russian navy that wants it to be delivered earlier because they will get it back earlier.

We can't jump directly on a 5th gen sub. Same case as LCA.

The Akula is a 4th gen sub not 3rd. Further, none of our adversaries have anything close to even akulas so why worry?

Negative. The initial deal allows for a buy option at our discretion.
Although what you said is true in that we will probably not go for it coz in 10 years we will have quite a few nuke subs in the water

Well if u get the chance to meet any Russian naval submariner ask him why he cant let go of the Shchuka-B he might tell you. It has a few really good specs and sensors that makes it one wonderful boat under the sea.

Wow, you are talking as if you have met one.

I said that by reading the image.

While i am not exactly sure , which generation Akula II belong to but still it is the quitest N Sub currently in Russian service and far better than any chinese N sub
Though it will be partly replaced by Graney class subs starting this yr

Indian Navy itself is quite impressed with Akula II and actually wants indian SSN to be based on it

However navy will submit its requirement or standards for the SSN only in around 2013-14 after having independently operated Akula II for 2-3 yrs to gauge all the requirements and specification for such a project

DRDO meanwhile was asked to conduct a feasibility and design study for such a project
Now what they have found out is that if they were adopt AKULA II class as a base for there SSN then
the 4 proposed SSN could cost upto 10 Billion USD or Rs 45000 cr , simply becoz they would be delivered in 2021 , and would actually be larger than HMS Astute at 9000 ton full load and could carry upto 24 Nirbhay Cruise Missile
The navy has requested that SSN should have far lower acoustic and Sonar signature than Arihant coz such subs would engage in attacking enemy Subs and surface vessels .
Certain Babus at DRDO recently even boasted that SSN project will have more of Graney than Akula

However there is one hurdle and that is price which could result in some hagling between MOD and FM

The second Design study carried out was for a smaller design of the size of French Baracuda class at 4500 empty or 5500 ton full load , this sub will be smaller than Arihant class but will have far lower Acoustic signature thanks to several subsystems and improvements incorporated from Akula II and Graney class
DRDO has said that such class of 4 SSN could cost upto Rs 30000 cr or 7 Billion USD , however they will have substantial lower fire power than AKULA II
Indian navy has an option to either have 3X4 BRAHMOS VLS + 1X4 NIRBHAY VLS or 2X4 NIRBHAY VLS + 6 BRAHMOS launched through Torpedo tubes

There was also a third design study however it was cancelled simply becoz it only involved replacing 12 K15 missiles of Arihant class with 12 Nirbhay missiles and 6-8 Brahmos cruise missiles launched through Torpedo Tubes , apart from higher use of radar absorbing material on Arihant's Hull

2.5 billion$ / sub is too much but they are claiming it to be bigger than Astute, well thats good. But cost is still high considering, research and labor and raw material, all are cheaper in India.
It is estimated that cost of 1 graney class to be 1 billion $, although some sources says it is 2 billion $ but still both are cheaper. While HMS astute costs around 1.2 billion euro and baracuda cost around 1.2 billion euro but all of them are cheaper than what is planned by India.

4 SSN in 10 billion $ is too costly for a country like India but we should not forget that we are also placing order for just 6 SSK in 11 billion $.
