JALANDHAR: Muslims protested outside the office of Commissioner of Police here on Friday for not allowing them to complete their prayers during Ramzan days on a Waqf Board land in Gazi Gulla locality after Hindu residents of the locality had opposed their offering prayers at the site and building a mosque there on Thursday.

Even as the Muslims had started offering prayers with the advent of Ramzan some days back on Thursday they were not allowed on Thursday evening after residents of the locality had opposed and staged a dharna outside the site.

The talks on Thursday failed to resolve the issue even as Muslim leaders had offered that they should be allowed to continue the prayers during Ramzan and they would not build a mosque.

The Muslims descended on the district administration complex after the prayers in the afternoon and their leaders announced that they would handover keys of around 20 mosques to the police in protest against continuation of Ramzan prayers at the site.

They had even announced to hold the evening prayers in DAC. However after negotiations with the police they returned after submitting a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Sarabjit Singh and police told them that the issue would be sorted out in three days.

"We had offered that let the Ramzan prayers be continued at the site and we shall not construct a mosque and an alternate place would be looked for that. But even at this the other side was not ready," said Usman Qureshi, member of Punjab Waqf Board and member of Shiromani Akali Dal General Council.

Meanwhile, Hindu activists including those from Congress, BJP and some right wing organizations also started a dharna in the street where the site under controversy is located and started singing bhajans.

Commissioner of Police Gaurav Yadav said "we have asked the DC to clear the status of land according to revenue record," he said.

Ramzan prayers: Now Muslims protest in Jalandhar - The Times of India

How ironic, Indian members desperately opened threads based on false rumours about Chinese Muslims not being allowed to observe Ramzan, yet, they conveniently ignore the in house bigotry.

It's ironic that Windjammer now trusts Times of India...

BTW a comment from article,

in the small town where I live, in my neighbourhood there was a vacant plot, after sometime some muslims build there a makeshift tamboo and started praying there, after sometime the no. of people praying there increased, the tamboo was now converted into a small masjid of some sort. After a few years they installed large loud speakers there and now the azan was called out on these loud speakers 5 times a day, today they have constructed a compound wall around that masjid structure. What started with a small tamboo has now been converted into a large masjid. Since the plot on which the masjid stands now is in my neighbourhood, I'm aware that it never belonged to any wakf or any other muslim, it was still owned by the state government.

That anecdote has nothing to do with the issue at hand where the land is Waqf owned and hence legally theirs. It's only that Hindus are acting allergic to the proximity of Muslim Ramadan activities.

It has. Please read again.

Anyway my personal opinion, a compromise should be reached where they be allowed to conduct the Ramzan prayers for this month with the assurance that no masjid will be built there.

Indian members -

No need to respond to this thread almost every muslim is oberving fast and obligatory paryers during ramadan freely. those who have never been to India will always rant such minor issues by ignoring a major fact that every one is freely observing ramadan in india right now .

Jalandhar, August 3
Some members of the Muslim community,
who were opposed by members of a Hindu
organisation while offering prayers at a
“disputed” land in Gazi Gulla on Thursday,
staged a dharna outside the office of the
Police Commissioner here today.
The irate members of the Muslim
community, who had planned to offer
namaaz (prayer) outside the Police
Commissioner’s office to press for their
demands, were tactfully dispersed from the
spot.
The community members submitted a
memorandum of their demands to the Police
Commissioner before winding up the
dharna.
Earlier, adequate police force was deployed
at Gazi Gulla, following tension after some
residents of the locality protested against
offering of namaaz by the Muslim
community at a plot, reportedly belonging to
the Punjab Waqf Board. While the Muslim
community claims that the land belongs to
the Punjab Waqf Board, the residents claim
otherwise.

@Pakistanis - THE LAND IS DISPUTED , SO IT IS COMMON SENSE THAT YOU DON'T GO IN GROUPS TO OFFER PRAYERS IN A LAND WHICH IS DISPUTED, UNTIL THE MATTER IS SETTLED LEGALLY. SO GET A LIFE.

SORRY THAT DAYS OF HARD WORK GONE IN VAIN. BETTER LUCK NEXT TIME .

It has. Please read again.
From the comment it does not mean its talking about the same incident he/she can be talking about some other incident. That's at least my assumption

Anyway my personal opinion, they should be allowed to conduct the prayers for this month with the assurance that no masjid will be built there. Before you pounce of me for it being Waqf land, can you guarentee that the sound of loudspeakers will stay inside the waqf land only and not disturb others living nearby ?

Do laws of physics not apply there or something?

All religious activities produce some sound, are all sound making religious activities banned in India?

In most Muslim countries loud speakers on mosques are regulated, different settings at different times. If a 30 second Azaan really becomes an issue in India then you have bigger problems. Again the issue at hand quite obviously is the allergic reaction given by the intolerant residents of the nearby area where in response they have started to conduct "Bhajans". So noise is not an issue, its being hit by sound waves generated by Muslim activity.

Before ppl jump with glee..

This appears to be a local issue. The prob does not seem to be with offering prayers but it is site specific.

Let the local administration handle this .

Hold your trolls till then.

Just coz its wakf board land does not necessarily mean a mosque can come there. Starting with saying prayers is the easiest way to formalise a mosque there.

This is what the locals must be objecting to as it appears from post No 1.

Use of loudspeakers in Mosques are not banned nor regulated in India.

You would not know how much noise is an issue at 5 in the morning and mosques dont have any regulation...

Anyway I would not like to take this further...this is not a religious issue, but a civil issue. The land is disputed and the Indian courts are there to adjudicate the issue based on records. I have trust in them to do justice.

They wouldn't have started singing Bhajans in response if noise was an issue (considering that's the only issue they have with a mosque), its not an Indian national issue but it does highlight the level of intolerance from the common people in certain localities.

Also it was the responsibility of the police to hand over a court notice to the Waqf board to not conduct prayers/construction there, not the local mob's.

It is obviously not as much as a clean issue as you are making it out to be. There is strong reprimand needed, instead there is strong defence of intolerance.
