Indian Muslims have become ‘less religious’ in 2021. They have become pessimistic about any improvement of religious harmony in India. And Indian Muslims are facing religious discrimination under Modi rule.

These are three broad themes that have come out from a recent survey conducted by the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS) in collaboration with Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS) a German think-tank.

The report, titled “Indian Youth: Aspirations and Vision for the Future”, was based on a survey that was conducted in July-August 2021 on 6,277 people aged 18-34 across 18 states. The CDS and KAS had conducted a similar survey in 2016 and have compared it with the findings made in 2021.

Indian Muslims have become ‘less religious’

The survey has found that the proportion of Muslims praying, fasting, visiting mosques, and reading religious books or watching religious material is lowered in comparison to 2016 when the last CSDS survey was conducted.

The CSDS survey conducted in 2016 had a sample size of 5,681; found that Muslim youths had higher religiosity than any other group. In 2016, 97 percent of Muslim respondents said they prayed regularly, followed by Hindus (92 percent), Sikhs (92 percent), and Christians (91 percent).

However, in the 2021 survey, only 86 percent of Muslim youth said they prayed regularly — a decline of 11 percent from five years ago. In comparison, the share of youth who report praying regularly has risen among Sikhs (96 percent) and Christians (93 percent), and declined only marginally for Hindus (88 percent).

Similarly, there is a sharp decline in the proportion of Muslim youths visiting places of worship. In 2016, 85 percent of Muslim respondents reported that they visited mosques at various frequencies but in 2021, only 79 percent said they did so.

Such decline was among other religions too but it was highest among Muslims — 6 percent, followed by 4 percent for Hindus (to 88 percent from 92), 2 percent for Christians (to 89 percent from 91), and 1 percent for Sikhs (to 96 percent from 97).

In the 2021 survey, 19 percent of respondents said their religious participation had witnessed an increase, while 17 percent said it had declined, 57 percent said it had stayed the same, and 7 percent did not give a response. Here too, a greater share of Muslims than other religions reported a net decline in their perception of their religious participation. While 18 percent of Muslim youth observed an increase in their religious participation, 20 percent felt that their religious participation had gone down.

About 25 percent of Christians and Sikhs respondents observed an increase in their religious participation 13 percent reported a decrease. Among Hindus, about 20 percent of respondents reported a rise in religious participation, while 16 percent observed a fall.

Pessimism about religious harmony in India

In this context, CSDS the survey asked the respondents whether religious harmony would improve or worsen in the next five years in India.

About 19 percent of Hindus said they believed there would be deterioration in communal harmony, 31 percent of Christians and 33 percent each of Muslims and Sikhs said they believed religious harmony would decline.

According to the CSDS report, the “despair” about religious co-existence was higher among the Muslims who lived in states with a Muslim population higher than the national average of 14.23 percent. These states are; Assam, West Bengal, UP, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Kerala. In these states collectively, 35 percent of Muslims said they expected deterioration compared with 23 percent in states with a lower-than-average Muslim population. While two other religious minorities, Christians and Sikhs, were similar to Muslims in expressing a “strong sense of despair” about communal harmony in India.

Muslims faces religious discrimination

The CSDS report reveals that Muslims faced more discrimination than other minorities. The report took note of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data to point out that cases of communal/religious rioting have nearly doubled from 2019 to 2020. The NCRB reported 438 cases in 2019, there were 857 cases in 2020. The report also mentioned “hate crimes and lynching” targeting Muslims as well as the new citizenship law CAA that discriminates against Muslims.

The survey further found that Muslims in states which had a higher-than-average Muslim population found higher religious discrimination because of their greater interaction with the Hindu community.

Muslims also stood apart from other communities in another respect: their experience of being discriminated against by their friends because of religion. Among the minorities sampled in the survey, Muslims reported experiencing discrimination from their friends most frequently. About 44 percent of Muslim respondents said they faced discrimination from their friends, with 13 percent saying this happened often and 31 percent saying it occurred sometimes.

While two other religious minorities, Christians and Sikhs reported a much lower proportion of experiencing religious discrimination. Only 18 percent of Christians (4 percent often, 14 percent sometimes) and 8 percent Sikhs (3 percent often, 5 percent sometimes) reported such discrimination.

The report said, on the issue of facing discrimination, Muslims were quite alone in feeling so. While, on average, 70 percent of the respondents said they never faced discrimination for their religion, this was only 49 percent for Muslims.

Conclusion

The survey report in its conclusion says that “one would think that being at the receiving end of hate, discrimination, and violence, it was possible that some Muslim respondents may have felt “less comfortable” about revealing their religious practices. This may be because Muslims are more guarded talking about their religion. Therefore the survey’s data may not be a true reflection of ground realities.

There is no doubt that in the finding there is all-around pessimism among Muslims in India. They see hardly any hope for the improvement of religious harmony in India. The finding that Muslims are being discriminated against in India is quite valid. However, the first finding that Indian Muslims have become ‘less religious’ in 2021 than in 2016 is debatable.

True!

Pakistani from Pakistan Punjab have Punjabi culture which has nothing to do with Hyderabadi Muslims which in turn is very distinct from Bengali Muslims which again is totally different from Muslims of Lucknow. Muslims in British era Punjab all moved to Pakistan during partition, none are left in Indian portion of Punjab. Indian Sikhs come closest "biologically" but then they are Sikhs and certainly not muslims.

Karachi has some muslims who had/have commonality with Bihari Muslims but that is the extant of it.

Pakhtoons / Pathans are a very very very small minority in India and are more of an exception.

Sindhi in India is similarly a very small and self contained community. Mostly Hindus.

Balochi are absent from India almost totally.

I think Ghazwa-e-Hind has already taken place, 1000 years of islamic rule was G-e-H I don't think there will be one anymore.

Are Indian Muslims mostly Punjabi? Nope!
Are Indian Muslims mostly Sindhi? Nope!
Are Indian Muslims mostly Pakhtoons? Nope!
Are Indian Muslims mostly Baloch? Certainly Nope!
Are Indian Muslims mostly Kashmiri? Again No!

Indian muslims are mostly UP/Bihari Muslims followed by Assamese / Bengali Muslims followed by Keraloit muslims followed by Konkani/Maharashtrian muslims followed by Hyderabadi muslims. All of these are absent from Pakistan or present as a minority at best. Heck they are/were called Muhajir for a reason. They were immigrants from India.

Now to be be frank with u These Indian Muslims deserve thats happening to them. Innhain bohot buri badwa laggi ha hamary unn mujahideen ki or un spies ki who risked their own lives for their protection and to fight for their rights against Hindus. And what they did? They conspired with Hindus against them to get them caught for getting them killed by them to score some brownie points with these non Muslim Hindus.

I sort of disagree with you.

There were many Deobandis/Salafis who agreed with the creation of Pakistan.

In a United South Asia we still would have been the minority of 25-33% only.

Jinnah was a Gujarati Muslim.

You talk about one person but I am talking about 96% of modern day Pakistanis compared to all modern day indians.
