Akash is cheaper and proven tech. It has better range too.

Then there is Barak 8 based SAM.

Maitri would probably work like Iron Dome.

End of the day it forms a part of our layered defence. Every layer plays its role.

Secondly MBDA must be handing over some important technology say seeker technology
and this can be a part of the overall Rafale offsets deal

India will be definitely getting the MBDA -- Meteor with the Rafale

So Maitri SR SAM is a part of the whole industrial benefits package

Then its a good deal,can we use this maitri seeker in other projects like astra mk2 onwatds

The SRSAM is now being re-pitched as a naval weapon, which will enable warships to defend themselves not just against enemy air attacks, but even to intercept enemy missiles up to a range of about 30 km. But the utility of the SRSAM for the Navy is being questioned because leading Indian warships are already equipped with the Israeli Barak anti-missile system, which can intercept airborne threats up to about 10 km. A multi-billion dollar development project with Israel is underway to increase the interception range of the Navy's missile defence system to 70 km. This project is now near completion. Whether the Navy needs a mid-way weapon is debatable, military analysts point out.

Looks like MBDA is transferring some really cool tech otherwise it is a waste of money

The indigenous surface-to-air missile Akash failing to inspire enough confidence for deployment on Indian Navy ships, the government has asked the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) to engage with the French firm MBDA missile systems for development of short-range surface-to-air missile system (SRSAM).

MBDA should be providing the active homing-head, thrust vector control, terminal guidance system and composites all based on the existing VL MICA

"DRDO will engage for development of nine SRSAMs which have 40 missiles each," a Navy source said.
This comes as a result of the decision taken to revive the $5 billion SRSAM programme 'Maitri' at the latest defence acquisition council (DAC) meeting of the ministry of defence (MoD) held on Saturday, March 28.

Meanwhile, the Indian Navy is also preparing to equip its warships with Israeli Barak-8 air-defence missile system which is to happen by the year end. "The DRDO- MBDA engagement, however, is for the next generation surface to air missile systems," said the source.

The DRDO had signed a Memorandum of Understanding with MBDA in 2013, but there has hardly been any progress because the DRDO’s Akash missile system has similar functions. The Army and the Air Force have expressed satisfaction with the capabilities of Akash, but the Navy has made it clear that Akash is not suitable for installation on warships. This is likely to be discussed further during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to France next week.

Astra is not designed for point / SR defence, that was the aim of the Trishul program which failed. We would need a WVR missile as the base, which in this case is MICA (the brits use ASRAAM for a similar development), but we don't have an indigenous alternative. I just hopw that we can use this project to the full extend, including A2A varients, without letting pride cloud our judgement and limit the potenial again.
