Power and Energy Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka today accused Indian media for publishing false reports claiming Sri Lanka was to get help from Pakistan in developing a nuclear power plant in Sampur, Trincomalee.

The report that was published on July 24 in Indian Today website claimed that it was Pakistan’s ‘grand design’ to influence the island with the active backing of China.
“We have taken no decision whatsoever to build any nuclear power plant in the island nor did we have any discussions with any foreign government with plans to build one. What India Today had published was a complete lie,” Minister Ranawaka told a news conference.

Mr. Ranawaka stressed it was important for the media to act with responsibility by not publishing false reports such as the above – especially at a time when the Pakistani Foreign Minister was visiting the country.

Mr. Ranawaka said there were long term plans to develop energy supply in areas such as Colombo, Kalpitiya, Trincomalee and Hambantota in the future but they did not need anyone’s permission for development.

“We don not want anyone’s permission for development. Our plans of development are based on our nation’s interest,” Mr. Ranawaka said.
The minister said the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) and the Indian National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) held discussions aimed at building a 500 megawatt power plant in Sampur. (Nishan Casseem)

look's like the Indians are still **** hurt over the defeat of the Tamil Tigers

we defeated them once in 87 and later helped SL finish them off. so why would our **** hurt?

and how is this relevant to the topic? which says that pakistan is incapable of development of nuclear plants

I see this report as face saver for the srilankan govt. which succumbed to the GOI pressures on last visit of National Security Advisor Shiv Shankar Menon.NPP report in Indian news papers was just the trial balloon floated by GOI to pressurize GoSL to cease and desist from any such plans with india in vicinity.

Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) is a multinational body concerned with reducing nuclear proliferation by controlling the export and re-transfer of materials that may be applicable to nuclear weapon development and by improving safeguards and protection on existing materials.

NSG has 46 members, Still Pakistan not a member of NSG.

As usual, Indian media bluffs........

Sri Lanka rejects call to withdraw army from north

Sri Lanka's president has rejected a call by Indian legislators to withdraw soldiers from the island's former war zone in the north where minority Tamils are concentrated, his spokesman said Sunday.

President Mahinda Rajapakse told a delegation of visiting Indian lawmakers that troops could not be pulled out despite the end of the decades-long Tamil separatist war in 2009.

"The president explained that there are troops elsewhere in the country as well," spokesman Bandula Jayasekera told AFP. "They are not only in the north."

The visiting delegation was the first team of Indian MPs to visit the island since Sri Lankan forces crushed the Tamil Tiger rebels, ending an ethnic conflict which had claimed up to 100,000 lives.

Sri Lankan forces have a strong presence across the north, which was badly damaged during decades of fighting.

Like how u and ur media bluffs?
Pakistan can help u in Nuclear energy as its not a member of NSG!!!
Learn basics first!!! But GoI will not allow the plan even to take off(if there was a plan)!!

You've got your equations dead wrong. The Indians helped the Sri Lankan Army to defeat the LTTE with everything from satellite surveillance to military advisers to prosecute the war. However, the Indians had nothing to do with the pogrom committed by the Sri Lankan Army on the Tamils during the closing stages of the ops!

So don't shoot from the hip when you know squat! :P

Whats the problem with SL having a nuke plant??

Depends on from whom they get it !!! As chinese say, its a geo- strategical game, which we cant afford to lower our guard in our neighbourhood !!

Well Pakistan to the best of my knowledge hasn't build a nuke plant on their own..so how they are planning to help SL.

Sri Lanka to build 1-GW nuclear power plant by 2030

Sri Lanka is to have its first nuclear power plant within the next 20 years to generate cheap electricity to draw large investments and boost its post-war economy, a top government official said.

"We have received government clearance to set up a nuclear power plant of 1,000 MW," M.M.C. Ferdinando, the secretary of the Ministry of Power and Energy told an investor forum in Colombo.

Ferdinando said the government would begin feasibility studies soon for nuclear power in addition to coal, and hoped to get safety approval from the World Atomic Energy Authority.

"You have to have the plant and safety measures for disposal before starting the plant by 2030."

Sri Lanka plans to cut its diesel power dependence to 20 percent of total electricity generation by 2017 once both coal power plants have started full operation.
