Indian jailed in Pakistan to return home today
New Delhi: Indian prisoner in Pakistan Gopal Dass, convicted of spying, will return home on Thursday after 27 years.
Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari remitted the remaining jail term of Gopal Dass on March 27.
Gopal Dass has been in jail for the last 27 years. The Supreme Court of India last month in a rare gesture had requested Pakistan to free Gopal Dass on humanitarian grounds.
Gopal Dass' family said he was arrested after he mistakenly crossed the Indo-Pak border.
Gopal's lawyer Arvind Sharma said it was a good thing that has happened to the family of Gopal Dass. "We have been fighting this case since 2008," he said.
Pakistan Interior Secretary had said, "It's a goodwill gesture. The President gave him pardon when he heard the case."
The goodwill gesture by Pakistan had come ahead of the two Prime Ministers' cricket diplomacy in Mohali.
