Indian human spaceflight program

a spectrometer is this device that receives incident radiation from a source and checks the wavelenght/freq of it's spectral make-up and comes out with the structural composition of the source of that radiation based on the principle that a particular substance reflects a particular wavelength of light akin to our viewing things in color here on earth as different substances reflect different shades of light...this is a very laymannish defn of a spectrometer that I understand..
I assume that a spectrophotometer would be a spectrometer which probably might use photons to spectrograph a substance....

In layman's terms, a spectrophotometer is used to measure the amount of radiation (EMR) absorbed or emitted by a source. Its got optical detectors which detect 'quantity' of EMR which passes/discharged through a sample.
Spectrometry encompasses the conversion of minute qties of substances into ions by bombarding them with an electron beam or laser and accelerating those ions with magnets or charges (we wouldnt know at this stage what those ions are) and making those ions impinge on a detector. This gives us their 'weights' and we can then deduce the original structure by joining these various ions (based on their 'weights') like a puzzle.
main difference - optical detection in spectro'photo'metery
against impingement of ions in spectrometry.

Nasa is talking so much about M3 ,becasue its the Nasa instrument on board c-1, designd for speciafic purpose of detecting water and other minrerals and their analysis based on primarily on m3.

Now that doesnt mean similar Isro insturments didnt detect water,no,infact its MIP,the first instrument on board c-1 to detect water and, ISRO waited for data generated by both indian & nasa instruments to be analyzed indepenedently and first appear in reputed Science magazine.


The fact is the data generated both by isro instruments which further corroborated by m3,confirm the presense of water on moonsurface.

The search for water on the surface of the anhydrous Moon remained an unfulfilled quest for 40 years. The Moon Mineralogy Mapper (M3) on Chandrayaan-1 has now detected absorption features near 2.8-3.0 µm on the surface of the Moon. For silicate bodies, such features are typically attributed to OH- and/or H2O-bearing materials. On the Moon, the feature is seen as a widely distributed absorption that appears strongest at cooler high latitudes and at several fresh feldspathic craters. The general lack of correlation of this feature in sunlit M3 data with neutron spectrometer H abundance data suggests that the formation and retention of OH and H2O is an ongoing surficial process. OH/H2O production processes may feed polar cold traps and make the lunar regolith a candidate source of volatiles for human exploration.

It's good for India to start their human spaceflight program.But I don't think they can send their first astronaut before 2020.You have to launch some unmanned space crafts to test the capability of the craft before you send your man into space,it will cost many years to finish the test

what do u think chandrayan-1 was???

It landed an indian flag on the moon surface.
Then india plans to send another unmanned moon mission by 2013 carrying a moon surface rover .

2020 is a realistic time frame for ISRO to achieve the capability to land an indian astronut on the moon.

Sir work on spacecraft already started. First manned space flight is on 2015 and manned moon mission is by 2020. Even though ISRO ready to wait and watch NASA sending man on moon as ISRO said would be better to watch does it goes smooth or not.

Sir china not in the list of India, japan, america, russia who landed flag on moon. Its risky to land flag on moon then to crash orbitor on moon in the end of mission. India landed moon impactprobe as soon as our chandrayaan above moon

i think he is saying it's difficult to return from the moon,not from the earth orbit,india will have the first nanned space mission in 2015 as planned,but it needs bigger rocket to send the man to moon, ISRO will do 1 or 2 unnanned test for safety, the moon landing is based on the first mission ,5 years is too short,there is chance though

Friend, I never said MIP did not contribute to the finding. What I emphasize is that M3 is officially the instrument that makes the contribution, as the tiltle of per the published paper indicates, with Pieter of Brown as the first author.

The result is surely shared between IRSO and NASA. So, please accept my congratulations on IRSO's fruitful cooperation with NASA!

Has India put any form of life in the Space Capsule Recovery Experiment? No, there was not any form of living organism, much less a dog! After dog, you might want to try a monkey.

Again, I'm not devaluating the mission, but just to point out that it still has a long way to go; and that your previous test is still very much in a relatively infant stage.
