It has been discussed to hell About future of IAF and IN. We almost can visualise the future inventories of these two forces, the battle readyness and doctrain.
But most neglected are our ground troops. The modernisation plans are too slow. The programs like FINSAAS, FMBT, FICV, BMD are in progress. Discuss The steps that should be taken to make our ground forces Mobile, versatile and most modern to handle any operation within next dacades.
Note: Its not a comparison thread. So keep pakistaan and china out of picture. Member please dont troll.

first of all our foot soldiers are most ignored amongs all tri services... but these all are the people who brings glory during war.....

my priority lsit will be

1:Light weight BPJ and helmets
2:quality shelters in border areas...
3: need to give proper break to the jawans especially for those who fighting in CI , so the morale wont go down....

Yeah absolutely right. But I think every soldier in J&K and NE are equipped with bullet resistant jackets and patkas. The patkas may look odd but mind it,very few helmet can protect from AK 47 rounds from 20 meter distance.

.
^^ from many pics of jawans from kashmir we can see that they all equiped with BPJ.. but point here is it is not light weight.....

But if you see the recent pics from any war exercise... they are not at all using BPJ as well patkas.... my point is we should reach in a level that our 1 million strength army should be equiped with light weight BPJs

Very vague discussion topic. Also too large a scope to discuss. Maybe splitting it would help.
1.Primary and Secondary Weapons
2. Protective Clothing
3. Vehicles and Equipment
4. Missile systems

At least BPJ's are being taken care of

Bulletproof jackets for troops - Times Of India

Bulletproof jackets for troops
Rajat Pandit, TNN Jan 17, 2011, 12.47am IST
NEW DELHI: Soldiers or humble grunts are often forgotten in the rush to clinch arms deals for main-battle tanks, submarines, and fighter jets. Now, after several years of delay, jawans are finally on course to get modular bullet-proof jackets and ballistic helmets with internal communication gear.

The new jackets and helmets will not only better protect the head, neck, chest, groin and sides of soldiers but also allow them to move with greater agility than the heavy obsolete ones they are currently saddled with.

A dozen companies have come forward with their proposals to the Army's tender, under which around 1.5 lakh bullet-proof jackets will be inducted in the first phase, with another 1.8 lakh or so to be acquired in the second round.
"Trials of the jackets, which will be modular in nature, ergonomically designed and fit snugly to provide maximum protection, will soon be held in Rajasthan deserts and Ladakh mountains," said a senior officer. The jackets, each costing around Rs 50,000, will also be tested in the Terminal Ballistics Research Lab in Chandigarh against the more lethal bullets currently being used by terrorists in J&K.

"Being modular, the jackets will provide graded levels of protection for different missions. Their weight will depend on the threat level," he said.

For a "low threat perception" mission, for instance, the jacket will weigh less than 4 kg and have "a trauma pad with all-around soft armour plate, including front, sides, back, collar and neck".

At the other end, in a high threat mission, the jacket will weigh 10.5-11.5 kg, with "hard armour plates" for front, rear, sides, upper arms, groin and throat, capable of protecting against 7.62mm x 39mm mild steel core ammunition fired from an AK-47 from 10 metre.

With Army engaged in intensive counter-insurgency operations in J&K and northeast, soldiers certainly need better head and body armour. In 2010, for instance, the force lost 15 officers, 13 JCOs and 159 soldiers in various operations.

But a soldier's life in India comes cheap. A parliamentary report last year noted the Army was still short of 1,86,138 bullet-proof jackets despite being authorized 3,53,765 new ones way back in March 2004. The situation has not improved much since then, said sources.

The 1.13-million Army does have a futuristic modernization programme for its foot-soldiers, the F-Insas (future infantry soldier as a system), but it's yet to gather steam.

F-Insas basically aims at converting a soldier into "a fully-networked all-terrain, all-weather, weapons platform with enhanced lethality, survivability, sustainability, mobility and situational awareness" for the digitized battlefield of the future.

Under it, infantry soldiers are to progressively get equipment like light-weight integrated ballistic helmets with "heads-up display" and miniaturised communication systems; portable visual, chemical and biological sensors; hand-held computer displays, GPS and video links; "smart" vests with sensors to monitor vital body signs; and lethal firepower with laser-guided modular weapon systems.

first of all the Indian army should go with digital camo for its troops i'm not sure what F-INSAS camo is but a lighter BPJ which can withstand 7.62 rounds is needed along with a lightweight composite ballistic helmet i am pretty sure the helmet and light bpj will be taken care of through F-INSAS

as for firearms ARMY NEEDS TO REPLACE INSAS RIFLES ASAP! me personally i'm all for use of indigenous weapons but the INSAS has had issues while in operation with IA soldiers especially during the Kargil war where there are stories of soldiers having to use their INSAS rifles like clubs because they had malfunctioned also many instances where bayonets had to be used.... IA needs a reliable 5.56mm standard assault rifle they should partner with Israel for the development of a new assault rifle for the IA soldiers to use or in the meantime buy we should buy the Daewoo K11 assault rifles from Korea

most of the things the army lacks will be taken care of through INSAS but as of right now a new assault rifle is needed ASAP

buying assault rifle for a huge army like india is not a good move.. it will escalate the budget drastically....

I believe India is already in the process of procuring assault rifles including multiple calibre rifles for the IA. You either worry about the budget or the security of the country. Can't have both! A well equipped soldier with an obsolete rifle will soon become a dead well equipped soldier with an obsolete rifle.

1. Bullet proof Jackets

2. Armoured vehicle

3. Artillery Guns for more fire power for Troops

4. Better Guns (seriously new guns not modified AK-47 )

first of all INSAS is not obsolete .... it is specifically designed for our needs.... we clearly cant afford to buy assault rifle for our million strength army....

the 4th point is really, our infantry need some guns like M4 carbine or Tavor tar 21. Light, accurate and great fire power. Modular weapons like pistols, balastic knife and Night Vision Googles should be provided to all. Digital camo is also really importent.

As part of the Indian Army's phased future infantry soldier as a system (F-INSAS) programme to create a fully integrated infantry soldier, Army HQ has floated requirements for a new assault rifle that will, potentially, be license-built in large numbers. A questionaire provided with RFI points to what the Army is looking for in its new ambidextrous assault rifle:

The Army has put down its preference for a modular assault rifle with changeable multiple caliber barrels to support 5.56x45mm, 7.62x39mm, 7.62x51mm, 6.8x43mm and 6.5 Grendel rounds. The rifle needs to have an integrated sighting system that includes a luminous tipped flip-up iron sight, telescopic sight and a holographic reflex sight with a visible laser illuminator. It clearly wants an advanced under-barrel grenade launcher with a standalone firing mode governed by a multipurpose fire control system.
