'Indian food is terrible' tweet sparks hot debate

Most people responding to that tweet are, and many of them are not even Indian. And I am just curious, if the food is as bad you say, why are there so many successful Indian restaurants in most of the world's major cities?

Some Indian dished are most sold dished in Many European countries.

Its not just Americans.

LOL a poll from 2014. Stop kidding yourself rape boy. These politically motivated polls don't mean much. You can jerk off by looking at them, but perception is formed on the ground.

Ask white women who go to India and see the real India. Rape, abuse, mass poverty, discrimination and filth all over the place.

What I don't like about the Indian style cooking is the over load of spices and red chillies in every thing. Not only they are uncomfortable to eat they also wreck havoc on ones digestive system. Keep on eating spicy and 'tarka' treated foods and you are sure to wind up with stomach and intestine related medical conditions.

I think you consider Punjabi food as Indian food. Food in South and East is quite different. Gujarati food has a dominant sweet test.

There are so many white women who visit India it is not even a big deal. Whereas Pakistan receives so few tourists they start jumping up and down whenever a gora visits. But then again, the state of Tamil Nadu receives more tourists in a year than the entirety of Pakistan.

LOL I can post dozens of YT videos where white women got abused in Hindustan and are extremely negative. Stop cherry picking and posting selective videos. These women were paid to make these videos. You know that too.

India is a rape hole. Modi has to beg Indian mothers to teach their sons some manners.

for every one of those videos you post, I can post half a dozen positive videos. I knew you were deluded and insecure, but claiming that random travel bloggers are paid to make positive videos by the Indian gov. is a new low. The Indian gov. has no idea who those people are. Whereas your GOV and ISPR starts jumping up and down and licking western a$$ whenever a white girl visits.

Here is a simple question. If India is so bad and Pakistan is so good, why does India get over ten times as many foreign tourists as Pakistan? And the biggest source of tourists to India isn't even the US, so please spare me your US bashing.

Stop begging on a Pakistani defence forum. The world knows your rape and caste division tendencies.

Our previous governments never promoted Pakistan like India has. Scumbags like Nawazoo i.e. Modi's business partner didn't care about tourism. They only cared about corruption and self-enrichment. Tourism doesn't happen by itself. A country has to promote itself. That is why Pakistan lacked in tourism and so many other things.

Why do Indians beg for Nawaz Sharif's release?

I know of enough Indian cuisine to say what I said. Please don't bank on paltry exceptions to shift focus. Wherever in the world, Indian food is available the very basic of the input you will receive will be on the immoderate use of spices and chillies.

Indian food is objectively terrible, no matter from what part of India. It is also disastrous for one's health and physique.

The culinary mastery of the Mughal empire was passed on to Pakistan, not India.
If that is so, why is South Indian food one of the most popular types of South Asian foods in Western countries? Sarvana Bhavan, a South Indian chain, is is one of the largest global chains of Indian restaurants. And why aren't there any Pakistani restaurants? Oh, I forgot, there is no such thing as Pakistani food. BTW, Biryani originitaed in Lucknow and Hyderabad, not Pakistan, and owes its origin from spices and flavors used long before the Mughal invasions.

lol you are really clutching at straws here

Indian food would be better if they didn't use heeng all the time. But I guess that's the main difference between Pakistani and Indian food.

Hing or Asafoetida is the spice which they add to every single one of their dishes. It overloads the food with pungency.

Hindus add it also to their hair, which is why they have that pungent odor.

On a side note, although a lot has already been said about the diversity of Indian food, most people still so not come close to understanding how diverse the cuisines of India are. For example, this is a good video of Gordon Ramsey tasting red ant chutney, a delicacy made by the tribal people of bastar district, Chhattisgarh.

add the northeast, and the scope of food becomes even wider.

'Indian food is terrible' tweet sparks hot debate

A tweet from a US academic calling Indian food "terrible" has sparked a hot debate about cultural intolerance and racism in international cuisine.

"Indian food is terrible and we pretend it isn't," said international affairs professor Tom Nichols.

Critics called his comment a tasteless generalisation.

The remark led to a wider discussion of the immigrant experience and how many in the US have experienced racism in relation to food.

Mr Nichols - who teaches at the US Naval War College in Rhode Island - posted his opinion after another Twitter user had asked for "controversial food opinions".

Critics were quick to respond. "Do you not have taste buds?" asked celebrity chef Padma Lakshmi.

"Imagine going through life this flavourless," wrote another commenter.

Preet Bharara, a former prosecutor from New York, tweeted: "Tom, I'll take you to a place. We need to bring the country together. #ButterChickenSummit."

Others said Mr Nichols had probably tried "less than 1%" of all Indian dishes, which come from a hugely diverse country. Mr Nichols later admitted that he had only ever eaten at Indian restaurants in the US and UK.

Mr Nichols' initial tweet led to a wider discussion about the way food plays into the immigrant experience.

Some noted that in the US, international food - sometimes called "ethnic food" - is often marketed as "cheap eats". Therefore many people are more familiar with pared-down, "Americanised" street dishes that lack authentic ingredients.

"There is no 'Indian' food'," wrote one commenter.

"Also there is no curry flavour. There is no chai tea," she added, referring to the fact that chai is simply a word meaning "tea" in Hindi, and "curry" is a style of dish, rather than a flavouring.

Others pointed out how smell and flavour have long been prevalent in racist comments towards minorities, and accused Mr Nichols of intolerance.

First-generation American Saira Rao wrote: "Having white people trash Indian food is extremely triggering as an Indian who has been told that I smell weird, that my food smells weird and that Indians [expletive] on the street which is why everything we are smells bad."

As the story drew attention in Indian media, the hashtag #MyFavoriteIndianFood started trending.

US presidential candidate Kamala Harris, whose mother's family hails from south India, shared a teaser for a cooking video with comedian Mindy Kaling using the hashtag.

But some foodies dismissed the row outright saying simply: "I see someone on twitter has racist views on Indian food. Well, more for me then."

From korma to coconuts – the evolution of Indian cuisine in the UK
Others took similar issue with a "controversial food" tweet from ABC senior reporter Terry Moran, who said: "Chinese food is tired. It's boring, gloppy, over-salted and utterly forgettable."

One person replied to his tweet: "Oh Lord here we go again with bubble-inhabiting white guy, announcing his pathetic ignorance of an entire cuisine and its myriad regional varieties".

Asian food lovers rounded on Moran, accusing him of having only eaten at takeout restaurants and never tasted authentic cuisine from the most populated country on Earth.
To some extent, he is right.
I always fought with my family members on this topic. Lot of oil and lot of spices and water. I mean food is not food, it's an art in our culture. And you can't eat art, simple.
