The problem is that the Indian Government forecast that India would be growing at 9.5% for the next half-decade.

It was only last summer that the Indian government forecast that the economy would grow at an annual rate of 9.0% to 9.5% for the next half-decade. So it came as a shock Thursday when new data revealed the economy slowed to a 5.3% annual clip in the January-March quarter.

And of course, future spending is based on these forecasts. Such as infrastructure and defence spending.

So now that growth in India has been at 5% for the last two quarters (with worse to come)... a lot of the future spending projections are looking unrealistic.

Of course not. Technically, any country can afford to "buy" Jet Fighters from other countries. Even small African states.

The question is, what do you have to give up in return. What is the opportunity cost?

That money could have been used either on economic development, or to strengthen your own indigenous defence industries.

Not that I'm complaining of course. If India spends less on economic development, and less on their own indigenous industries, and sends their hard earned money to France instead, that is surely good for us.

India spends FAR,FAR more on healthcare,education and poverty alleviation. As with all major arms deals the MMRCA will be paid for over a long period of time (15 years+) so the annual expenditure on the deal will be very,very small for a nation as large as India and will have minimal impact on the expenditure as a whole. And the MMRCA with all the TOT and offsets will be a massive boost to indigenous firms, especially pvt players.

Yes, in the grand scheme of things, the financial cost of the MMRCA deal is not really that much.

@CD economic development is important but our defence is even more important.... About our defence industry i would say it will improve by time.... But we cant wait. Mig21 older than old.... We lost many pilots due to vintage mig21.... We need jet fighters to replace many migs. Rafale is best option for Long term.... And india doesnt need much infrastructure for Rafale as we already have French Fighters experience since long.... Rafale will change india's position. Rafale, PAK-FA, FGFA, MCA will be india's future Jet fighters. We need to secure our defence. India was super power before bloody brits enterd india. If we had the military power back then, than today india would had looked different.... War been faught since universe was created. There will be war in future and we need to prepare for it.... Rafale's omni role makes Rafale the Best economic choice.... Benefit Rafale will bring will improve our defence industry too.... (am talking about ToT)....
