Cordon and Search operations in Kashmir were abandoned 15 years ago by the army in view of inconveniences faced by locals

Last week the army had carried out a cordon and search operation in Kashmir's Shopian.

SRINAGAR: Two days after terrorists dragged out a young army officer, tortured and murdered him, the army decided to make "cordon and search operations" a permanent feature of its anti-terror operations in Kashmir. The procedure, which was followed rigorously at the height of militancy in Kashmir in the 1990s, had been abandoned 15 years ago in view of the inconvenience locals faced during such operations.

The biggest cordon and search operation in recent times was carried out across two dozen villages in Shopian last week. As thousands of policemen combed through villages and orchards, unmanned aerial vehicles and choppers had monitored the operation from air.


The decision to make such drills a part-and-parcel of anti-terror operations came as a huge groundswell of support for terrorists is observed in Kashmir, especially after the five-month protests took place last year following the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist Burhan Wani.


The support is at its most visible during operations against terrorists holed up in villages and buildings. Locals gather in strength and their presence often help some of the terrorists escape.

The funerals of terrorists too, have been drawing large crowds lately, especially in South Kashmir. The five-month protests last year had started after the funeral of Burhan Wani, when the mourners had clashed with security forces. Last week, thousands had participated in the funeral of Lashkar-e Taiba terrorist Fayaz Ahmad Aishwar, who was involved in the attack on the Border Security Forces camp in Udhampur in 2015 and carried a reward of Rs. 2 lakh on his head.


Anti-terror operations had virtually come to a halt during the long unrest last year. As the situation settled, security forces found that an increasing number of local men have joined the ranks of terrorists. Over the last few months, terrorists have robbed banks, beaten up security forces and snatched their weapons. On Tuesday, in a first, they dragged away a 22-year-old lieutenant, Ummer Fayaz, from a wedding he was attending. His bruised and bullet riddled body was found the next day.


Signalling an aggressive stance, The Army has decided to re-introduce cordon and search operations (CASO) as a "permanent feature" of its campaign against militants, nearly 15 years after the practice was abandoned.

Army sources said CASO will be carried out in a major way in militancy-hit areas of Kulgam, Pulwama, Tral, Budgam and Shopian in south Kashmir.

They see the consequences for indian muslims, they see the writing on the wall

They see the meat mans, the lynchings because of beef, azaan, talaq it will go on.

Your voice echoes the sound of Pakistani leaders who told World that Kargil war has been conducted by Kashmiri Mujahideen and has nothing to do with PA,only to retract it after finding their own army betrayed them.

Unstable Kashmir is always a Pakistani design.They tried it in 47,65 and continuously doing so since 89.Sadly,they wasted massive amount of resources without much success and they're the reason World don't pay any attention to Kashmir,rather asks Pakistan to keep their proxies in check.

Pakistanis are yet to understand how democracies control these kind of situations.They play this game with their own design.They play the role of a victim first,then emerge victor.Its only sad to see that Kashmiris are paying for someone else' crime.

Do you even know what you are talking? Kashmir valley has no impact if India or rest of Indians are Hindus. Plus I have not idea why some Muslims have a phobia about Hindus. They live there own life, tell me one single impact to their life even if the situation is normal. Those Hindus are not in valley period.
