Defense Acquisition Council (DAC) headed by India’s Defense Minister Manohar Parrikar has cleared the proposal for latest version of T-90 tanks.

The approved version of T-90 tanks will be equipped with thermal imaging night vision cameras and some additional countermeasures to significantly reduce the chances of being hit by enemy anti-tank semi-automatic guided weapons. “It is an undeniable fact that some of the T-72 tanks issued to the units about 25 years back are to be replaced by newer tanks.

The T-90 tank has many features which the T-72 did not possess. The option to go for an entirely new design would take more time. Besides, some machines for manufacture of the T-90 tank and the workforce are already available. All these factors recommend manufacture of T-90 tank domestically. In any case it is a good tank,” said Brigadier Rumel Dahiya, a defense expert.

Sources added that the tanks will be manufactured by the state-owned Ordnance Factory Board. The T-90 is already being assembled at Heavy Vehicle Factory (HVF), Avadi, in the southern state of Tamil Nadu. “Where to employ the new tanks is an operational decision. Suffice is to say that the tank is fit to be deployed anywhere,” says Brig. Dahiya on the issue of importance of deployment along western border.

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu has begun work to set up a defence related component manufacturing cluster aimed at primarily supplying to the battle tank and heavy-duty engine factories in Avadi as a first step and, possibly, export to other nations eventually

The state's small and medium industries department had a meeting with industry representatives late last month to discuss land availability .

Confirming the plan to set up a defence manufacturing cluster, Mangath Ram Sharma, chairman and managing director of Tamil Nadu Small Industries Development, said: "The discussions are in the preliminary stage. Right now, talks are on with small units near Ambattur to examine if they are interested in this cluster approach. But, we will soon prepare a technical and financial feasibility report."

According to a report on the meeting held last month accessed by ET, the 150-acre cluster will have mechanical and electronic component makers along with a testing and data analytics centre.

While Avadi is a natural choice with its heavy vehicle factory and a research centre for combat vehicles, the government is also considering Thervoy Kandigai in Tiruvallur district, where about 130 acres of land held by the government can be repurposed for the defence cluster. Land parcels near Sriperumbudur by the current aerospace park are also probable locations after Avadi.

"Till now, many suppliers to the tank factories and testing facilities in Tamil Nadu are present outside the state. The plan is to get them to invest in the state," said a top government official requesting anonymity .

According to the Defense Ministry sources, the Army wants to induct the latest version of T-90 tanks as early as possible. The Ministry had approved the purchase of 64 T-90MS tanks.

T-90 is the third generation Russian tank known for its fire power. The export version of the new T-90MS tanks includes fragmentation projectile with remote detonation to cause further havoc in adversary’s ranks.

“T-90MS will replace the older T-72 tanks. It addresses some of the shortcomings of T-90, is easily transportable and less weighty. The domestically made Arjun tanks were originally suited for the terrain in the border states of Punjab and Rajasthan. But increasing population centers and an enhanced network of canals have limited its areas of deployment and operations. This is where T-90MS will be more useful because they are lighter and more maneuverable. The low ground pressure of T-90 MS tanks is an advantage in the soft sands of Rajasthan and mud of Punjab.

“Therefore, T-90MS tanks are well suited to Indian army. The latest features also enhance the fire power. So, T-90MS tanks are urgent needed by the Indian Army in the present situation,” Major General (Rtd) G D Bakshi told Sputnik.

The indigenously-built third generation, fire-and-forget anti-tank missile, Nag, scored a “bull’s eye” and successfully hit the target 4 km away during a night trial in the Mahajan Field Firing Range, Rajasthan, last week.

During the test, the Thermal Target System (TTS) developed by a defence laboratory at Jodhpur was used as target for the missile, which is in the final user configuration. TTS simulated a target similar to an operational tank as thermal mapping from tank to TTS was carried out for generating thermal signature.

According to scientists of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the trial validated the enhanced 4-km range capability of Imaging-Infrared seeker, which guides the missile to the target after its launch. The scientists said multi-purpose mission exercises were carried out for improving the system. With the modified seeker achieving requisite range capability, the scientists said the Nag missile was now ready for final, pre-induction user trials.

Director of Defence Research and Development Laboratory, (DRDL) K. Jayaraman said the final user trials would be conducted in different conditions in summer and winter this year. Using HEAT (High explosive anti-tank) warhead, the top-attack all-weather fire-and-forget system is capable of destroying modern tanks with armoured protection by nullifying their ERA (explosive reactive armour).

Jodhpur, July 13:
In fresh trials, India has test-fired its indigenously developed Nag anti-tank guided missile, which can hit a target upto seven km, from a helicopter at a firing range in Jaisalmer in Rajasthan.

On July 8, 2013, seeker evaluation trials for anti-tank missile were carried out in hot desert conditions in Rajasthan at Pokhran.

The trials were against both moving and static targets for different ranges of 2.8 km and 3.2 km to evaluate the performance of an improved version of Imaging Infrared (IIR) seeker.

While Nag missile has a maximum range of 4 km, the IIR seeker proved to be accurate only up to 2.5 km in extremely hot conditions in the trials conducted earlier.

‘Chennai is a strategic location for establishing a defence manufacturing cluster’

Tamil Nadu is keen on developing a defence manufacturing cluster and it would be the key area for inviting investments in the State in the upcoming Global Investors Meet, M.S. Shanmugan, additional secretary, Industries Department, said.

According to a study by Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry in India (Assocham), Greater Chennai defence manufacturing cluster, including the manufacturing zones of Avadi, Ambattur, Sriperumbudur and Oragadam, had the potential to create 10 lakh jobs and invite investments of Rs. 60,000 crore over a 15-year period.

“Industries department had already deputed officials to visit various sites for the possible location of the cluster,” Mr. Shanmugam said speaking at the session on opportunities in defence manufacturing, organised by Assocham and Ambattur Industrial Estate Manufacturers Association.

He also said the proposed cluster would have to include the Ponneri, Arakkonam and Gummidipoondi industrial belts to spread the accrued benefits.

Clusters are groups of inter-related industries that drive wealth creation in a region, primarily through export of goods and services.

According to Assocham, Chennai is a strategic location for establishing a defence manufacturing cluster because of its proximity to the various major military establishments.

“Tamil Nadu by itself is an active area with respect to military establishments. The presence of BHEL in Ranipet and Trichy, OFT, HAPP, ISRO in Mahendragiri, further facilitate the emergence of a defence cluster in the State. The setting up of a defence cluster in Chennai also presents an opportunity for rendering defence related services to Tamil Nadu as a whole,” the study said.

The study also suggested that the cluster can be extended into a township, citing the example of BHEL, Tiruchi. “BHEL is an example of a thriving integrated township in Tamil Nadu and an insight can be drawn from it for the proposed Defence Cluster at Avadi,” it noted.

The Army is looking to upgrade the T-90 main battle tank to enhance firepower and mobility. They are going to be equipped with a new missile system and a new more powerful modular engine.

“As the design of the existing INVAR missile has been maximised, both in terms of range and Depth of Penetration (DoP), it is imperative to upgrade it to next-generation missiles with enhanced capability,” according to PTI. The third-generation missile should achieve a DoP of 800-850 mm and be capable of hitting targets up to a range of 8 km against mobile as well as static targets.

Tanks are relevant in case of unorganized elements like terrorist who lacks money,manpower shortage of ammunition both in quality and quantity. Tanks will give better protection while fighting them. But against a worthfull openent its chances are diminishing slowly but steadily.

Tanks are relevant in India Pakistan war in future but only that side may win who will have proper 21st Century tech and system support available, and infantry with fast, nimble and light armoured vehicles equipped with 8-10km range ATGMs, 105 Howitzers, mortars Advance AAAs and SAMs may be able to tackle any massive tank assault in NCW environment.
