Indian Army to hold massive exercise along Pakistan border.

I don't understand why this exercise is being held in Western desert by SOUTHERN command? Surely Southern command is meant to operate in the SOUTH? maybe I have this wrong though and I suppose having strike corps with a wide spectrum of operational capability is a good thing.

Also to those embers talking about animosity and war mongering- ALL armies (al least professional ones) train based on threat perception Hence why post 2001/Iraq US army basic training now includes ALOT more urban op training. And since of the Five wars India has thought FOUR of them have been with Pakistan and given the conspiracies coming out of Pakistan directed at India, no doubt India sees Pakistan as the most likely (and only one foolish enough) to risk a war in the immediate future. If you think about it in a LOGICAL way it makes perfect sense.

+ does anyone else notice there have been quite a few exercises recently- this is just tha latest and they have all been in a HUGE scale, what's up? Just regular drills? Also is there to be a Vayu Shakti 2011? 2010 VS was AWESOME!!

excellent for the indians, let's see the cold start then

My 2 pences...

Such exercises are indeed required by defence forces, for them to ensure that they stay sharp and ready to react in case of an exigency... However, I think we have seen 3-4 such exercies on the western front (and all of them have invited interest from the press) in the last 2 months or so and i don't remember such an instance in Past, which I find a bit surprising!... But, in the heart of Cold Start Doctrine, large scale mobilization is the main artery and such exercises help establish those capabilities... So, these are welcome moves by Indian Army... However, won't a consistent activity program (instead of waves of exercises) will ensure that red-flags don't come up everytime there is a surge in such activity or a huge activity...?

I don't think an exercise 5km from pakistani border is going to add any value, other than some symbolic which, which could be a bit counter productive (could be considered provocative), given the current turmoil in Pakistan... This will not be helpful. And I am glad that IA is more mature that it does its own stuff instead of listening to what some of us 'fanboys' want it do or show-off...

The moot point of such exercises is the capability to mobilize, within a target time and capability to manage a terrain... and these things can be managed anywhere in the Western Border, without causing any major 'brow-raising'...

The only part I am confused about is that we are known to be relatively underprepared in North-eastern front and I don't remember reading about any major exercises in the hills (from Leh to Arunachal, except the Nepal border), which to my mind and more or equally critical (and thus required) to those on the western side... I might have missed some of the exercies in these areas and will be happy to be corrected... But, given the Chinese strike capability build up in the eastern border, i'd be wanting to check my engines frequently on that front as well...

Lol, and then Indians claim that they harbor no animosity towards Pakistanis and Pakistan's suspicions towards India have no base. I just hope that your hate keeps increasing as it will only rot you from the Inside.

Releasing and sending back home some 70,000 pak soldiers during 71 and returning the land occupied unpto Lahore didnt showed any hate towards Pakistan?

If Indira is not so generous at that time, I bet Kashmir issue would have been solved by force and Pak would have been reduce to half of its size by now..

But If I have to use the same phrases coining with the word pak in it, there are plenty of incidents oops sorry, there are millions of incidents where pak shows its hate towards India and has sworn to destroy India.

Haha pakistani members are burning here

Good it was due time for another exercise

This is an exercise scripted by the Pentagon to test network-centric warfare lessons they learnt in the two Iraq wars. Eventually they would push India to try these out live in the Rajasthan Desert.

My jumpy lil Indian friends: We do not have a problem with any exercises that you guys hold. We just want you to accept that a war resulting in the devastation of Pakistan is the one wish you guys would ask for, if you had a genie in a bottle. Please stop pretending to be these harmless lil creatures who just watch Bollywood movies and answer calls in a contact center. At least have the guts and morality to step up and take heat for what you believe in.
