The Indian Army is reportedly set to receive a batch of indigenously developed 5.56mm assault rifles in March.

Developed by the Ordnance Factory Board (OFB), the new assault rifle is based on Bofors guns and will replace the existing 5.56mm Insas rifle.

OFB completed a series of tests to evaluate the rifle's capabilities at Mhow, Madhya Pradesh.

OFB director general AK Prabhakar was quoted by Times of India as saying: "The assault rifle is going to be the owner's pride and neighbour's envy.

"The tests were successful and it is hoped that the army will accept it."

The Indian Army currently use standard issue weapons that are believed to be inferior to those used by militants.

The Indian Ministry of Defence (MoD) had previously requested rifles with interchangeable barrels.

OFB recently completed the successful test-firing of a superior assault rifle based on existing 130mm guns at Pokhran, Rajasthan.

Prabhakar was further quoted by Business-Standard as saying: "We have future plans to develop and manufacture SMERCH rockets, Pinaka Mk-II, latest version of 84mm Karl Gustav with tandem warheads, 125mm FSAPDS ammunition, new generation 5.56 assault rifles and new generation smart ammunitions and future infantry combat vehicle (FICV)."

If accepted by the Army, the assault rifle will replace the Insas, which is also an ordnance factory product

Nagpur: After tests carried out on the indigenously developed 5.56mm assault rifle at Mhow, Madhya Pradesh, over a month ago proved to be successful, the Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) hopes that it may be soon accepted by the Army. At the same time, the first batch of indigenously developed Bofors type guns may be dispatched to the Army in March, said OFB director general AK Prabhakar.

He was in the city to attend the valedictory function at National Academy of Defence Production, which trains officers joining the Indian Ordnance Factory Service (IOFS) cadre.

The assault rifle is expected to replace the current 5.56 Insas rifle, which is the standard issue weapon for the Army since the mid-1990s. The Insas, which is also an ordnance factory product, was often reported to be inferior to the AK-47s used by militants.

Over a couple of years ago, the Army had invited offers for rifles with interchangeable barrels but did not get any response from global players. In the meantime, since the Army is looking for single barrel rifles now, OFB is also pushing this gun developed jointly with DRDO.

"The assault rifle is going to be the owner's pride and neighbour's envy," said Prabhakar while addressing the NADP function. Later, speaking to newspersons, he said that the process is at an advanced stage. "The tests were successful and it is hoped that the Army will accept it," he said.

A source in the OFB added the current Insas available with the Army is technically not an assault rifle. The new weapon being developed by OFB has rapid fire feature, matching it with the AK-47. The ordnance factory has also developed an assault rifle of 7.62mm calibre, which is being offered to the para military forces.

Prabhakar said that apart from the 155x45 mm calibre howitzers based on the Bofors guns, which will reach the Army in March, the OFB has also developed a 155x52 mm gun, which is a higher version. It was test fired recently at Pokhran. This gun has a higher range than the 155x45mm calibre and was made by improvising the existing 130mm guns available with the Army.

The ordnance factories are carrying out production orders worth Rs13,000 core, which the OFB plans to take to Rs15,000 crore the next year and Rs. 20,000 core the year after, said the OFB Chief.

I didnt even need to read any of it. The writer titles that bad INSAS photoshop made by a member in another forum, as "Kalantak", which it isnt. The second picture is of a modified FAL not from India, and not Trichy. He also mixed up the Trichy rifle with the multi caliber MCIWS. If they cant get those right, there's no point reading any of it.

WTF did I just read.

Can anybody say what is special about this rifle. What is muzzle velocity and why it is neigbor's envy and owner's pride. It seem to be a long barrel rifle like the one on American M series. Is this rifle a fusion of something of INSAS, M series and AK series? It appears so from the picture. 5.56 mm round (May be prolonged by 1 mm), firing mechanism of AK and long barrel of M series? What say?

Sorry boss,
First image is a Photoshop, there is no such SCAR type buttstock on insas, The Second image is a 7.62x51 Nato FNFAL not the Trichy Rifle.
