Indian Army headquarters is discouraging senior officers from flaunting their rank in public by displaying the stars that connote their position in the service.
A lieutenant general was recently ridiculed on social media after a boat he hired to scatter a relative's ashes in the Ganges was photographed sporting the official army flag and three stars.
Although the officer blamed "over enthusiastic" juniors, "such an explanation holds no water", said Major General Mrinal Suman (rtd). Senior officers relish such treatment, he added.
Other examples of "overenthusiastic adornment" include mules in inaccessible mountainous areas and golf carts, caps, and caddy T-shirts at army golf courses across the country.
