Indian army officer killed, 2 troopers injured in blast in India-controlled
Kashmir 10:36, November 09, 2009

An Indian army officer was killed and two troopers were injured Sunday in a "mysterious bomb blast" near line-of control (LoC) in India-controlled Kashmir, defense officials said.

The incident took place around 07:00 am local time in Poonch sector 250 km northwest of Jammu, the winter capital of India-controlled Kashmir.

"Early morning when the troopers were returning from the patrol, it was hit by a bomb blast that left three soldiers including a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) injured. Though they were rushed to the hospital immediately but the JCO succumbed to his injuries. The other two soldiers are injured and undergoing treatment," said defense spokesperson Jammu, Lt. Col. Biplab Nath over the telephone.

Nath said the investigations are going on to ascertain the actual details.

Initial reports suggest that a blast took place but inquiry is in process to know what happened and all the relevant details," Nath added.

The LoC is a de facto border between India and Pakistan dividing Kashmir into two parts.

Does a mine make sense? This is LoC....many places are mined..this "mysterious bomb blast" spin is another tactic of sensationalizing the incident. Sometimes the most simple explanation is the right one.

By mine I assume you mean a pressure triggered land mine. That's unlikely in most areas. Mining is usually done on the LoC/IB. Its more likely it was an Improved Explosive Device. And you're right the 'mysterious bomb blast' isn't a smart comment, and it can probably be attributed to some second rate journalist rather than the army.
