Trapped in Chennai Deluge, Army, IAF Rescue Victims to Safety

HYDERABAD: It was a great relief for 108 people from Chennai, as the Indian Air Force’s C-17 Globemaster, the hero in many daring rescue missions, touched ground in Hyderabad. After struggling for days in rain-soaked Chennai, where they were caught in neck-deep water, and made to survive without power and drinking water, the 108 survivors were in tears as they landed in the Air Force Station, Begumpet airstrip.
The people who were stuck at Chennai airport and places around the flooded metro were rescued by Army and Air Force personnel and brought them to Air Force Station, Begumpet on Thursday evening.
Some of the people were stuck in appartments surrounded by water with infants and children. For more than two-days, their lives were clouded with uncertainty as they waited in desperation for the arrival of rescue workers in the flooded city.
Most of the people who were rescued by the armed force personnel are from different states such as Haryana, Delhi and Karnataka. Elderly, physically disabled, infants, children, men and women of all ages thanked the forces as the disembarked from the aircraft with their luggage. All of them were brought from Arakkonam Naval Air Base to Hyderabad.
A physically disabled woman, Preethi Gupta, who was returning from Port Blair along with her husband, was supposed to reach Delhi, but whe was cought in the flood in Chennai. Sitting on a wheel-chair on the airport tarmac, she recalled the tough times faced in past two-days.
“When we landed in Chennai on December 1 evening, the situation was chaotic. At 11 pm, it was announced that aircrafts will not operate from there. There was lot of uncertainty. We were told that departure of aircraft to Delhi was doubtful and given an option to go to Hyderabad. We came here,” she said.
Another person, Kesardagar, who was returning from Tirupati along with 18 of his family members was stranded in Chennai airport. After getting down from the aircraft at Hyderabad, he raised his thumbs in appreciation.
“Food and water was not supplied by the Chennai airport authorities. Indian Army helped us and got here,” Kesardagar said adding they will be leaving to Faridabad, Haryana.
Some students from SRM University said that water reached neck level and they were rescued by Army in boats to safer place.
A student of the university, Rajani said, “Water reached up to neck level. We were taken in boats to campus main building where there was electricity. We were brought to Arakkonam from there,” she said. Another student, Abhinav, said that it was a relief to reach Hyderabad.
All of them were rescued and provided with food, water and medical aid after reaching the Begumpet Air Force Station. From there, they were taken to Shamshabad Airport, railway station and bus stations. More than 100 people were brought to Hyderabad by Air Force personnel on Thursday late evening.
