About whether India is currently ruled by Hindu extremists - I hope not. And I have good reasons for it. Even though it is true that the Chaddi Gang has become quite visible and powerful in recent years, it is equally true that this is only so because they feel that they now have their own government in the centre. The moment BJP will lose an election, they will scamper back into the holes they crawled out of.
India is a heterogeneous society. Such stupid fascist movements can survive, but can never successfully takeover the entire state. Too many people who don't agree with their views - from religious minorities to most lower caste Hindus, liberals, Dravidians, North-easterns, etc.
As for eating beef, I think it is a complex issue. I personally have reduced my beef-eating drastically. And the reason being that eating beef is environmentally unsustainable. Raising cows/buffaloes for slaughter is the most energy inefficient way of producing food. That of course applies to all meat so I eat vegetarian much more nowadays.
And then there is that fact that since cow meat is illegal in most states, it is usually from illegal slaughter houses and is diseased. So in any case people are better off eating buffalo meat, if they wish. But the law of the land should be respected, IMO.
As for its religious significance, being an Atheist I have obviously no interest in that. And since lynching people is against the law, it is quite obvious as to what should be done to any RSS-type fellow who decides to get all emotional and go minority-hunting. A lifetime spent in jail should give him enough time to consider his stupidity.
But then finally, my friend, I have this to ask. So some stupid people claim that eating of beef hurts their religious sentiments and no one should do it. You see the stupidity in that. Fine by me. But then will you apply the same logic if someone does something that you find insulting to your own religion? Because tolerance and liberal ideals are a two way street. No room for hypocrisy and double standards.
I agree with you and hope world becomes a better place to live in harmony
