New Delhi: India will not support Western sanctions against Russia over the annexation of Crimea from Ukraine, government sources have told NDTV.

Yesterday, Russian President Vladimir Putin telephoned Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and explained the situation over Crimea, just hours after taking the step of merging the region with his country. Dr Singh, in turn, underlined India's position on "unity and territorial integrity" of countries and hoped a diplomatic solution would be found to the issue.

Sources have told NDTV that India is doing a balancing act on Russia since it does not favour referendums. Officials told NDTV that New Delhi, in principle, cannot support a referendum as the only basis for breaking up a country.

At the same time, sources said India recognised the "legitimate" interests of Russia in Ukraine, which was articulated on record by National Security Advisor Shiv Shankar Menon last week.

However, Indian officials are clear that if it comes down to choosing between the West and Russia, New Delhi will back the latter, an old ally, said sources.

Officially India do not recognize referendums in any part of the world. However, Our foreign policy requires our support to Russia. Hence it has been decided to favor Russian stand on annexation of Crimea on historical basis and not on referendum basis.

Here lies our response to Pakistani members who were jumping around and asking why India cant recognize referendum in Kashmir if it can do so in Crimea.

Expected, India always play safe in any international conflict by just saying 'we will not support actions by any country/group unless approved by United Nations. Approval of United nations means approval from the big 5 who got Veto power. Since ,most of the conflicts will have different views within Big5, we are safe...there will be no resolutions from UN.

@vostok mate what's your take in this matter?i mean are you a bit disappointed that India hasn't officially supported the annexation of Crimea by Russia through a refrendum!

Actually India did support the U.S.S.R. invasion of Afganistan back in 1979.The then P.M.o f India Mrs.Indira Gandhi openly pledged our support for the U.S.S.R. in the U.N. General Assembly(which was quite a right thing to do considering the fact that U.S.S.R. was the big brother of India at that time)..:coffee:
