India won't need coal imports by 2017: Piyush Goyal

Do you know how much oil reserves US has ? Do you know the same country is the second largest importer of crude oil, surpassed by China only recently ? Do you know why ?
Help us here please. Let's see why it is beneficial for India to import coal instead of mining her own??

Is there any possibility for India to stop the use of Coal based energy keeping climate change in mind .

Should we introduce Electric and Solar cars in the market .
Should we connect our new cities , towns and Villages with Carbon Free Energy .

India needs to look at improving the power grid and going 100% ELECTRIC for all energy needs. Reduce the need for LNG and Oil.

Once that happens all energy needs in country can be met from domestic coal and renewable energy, instead of unstable foreign sources like ME.

Don't listen to him. India needs to mine as much local coal as possible. 1.5 billion tonne production by 2020 is ambitious but it would kick-start a massive manufacturing boom that would give jobs to hundreds of millions of people. Cheap, reliable energy is vital to national interests.

US imports crude oil because it exports a tremendous amount as well. Plus a lot of their imports are from Mexico and Canada, both friendly nations that do not seek to harm USA. This is not the case with India importing oil from the likes of SA.

1. India does not have good quality coal.
2. Don't use your own stock until and unless it is absolutely necessary to do so.

US exports a tremendous amount ? And what will be the figure for this 'tremendous' amount ? What will be the global rank of US in terms of oil export ? Also, I would very much like to know why one would sell a commodity, just to buy the same at higher price ?

Sir. This thought just came in my mind which changed my opinion which was earlier similar to yours.

1.As the article says, we have enough coal to burn for next 100 years. I take , we will be having them for At least 75?
Now just think , will we still reliant on coal about 70 years from now?
In my opinion not.

So if we import and don't use ours, then the unused resources will remain unused.

2. Think about the number of coal power station in India which work on less than 50% capacity due to lack of coal. If we start using our coal , then think about the number of jobs it will create.

I am personally in favour of this. Because 1/3rd coal deposits in India are in Jharkhand, my state. This will hopefully change our fortunes.

WRONG mate !
Your opinion does not matter. We are mining high quality coal & using it in power plants & steel plants.

You have any figures for that ?

Not much. We import anthracite from Australia.
We have 300 billion metric tonnes of coal. At current mining rate of 0.5 billion metric tonnes a year our coal reserves will last for 600 years. Even if we double the mining rate which BJP wants to do it will last for 300 years.

India does not have they highest quality coal but it is not bad. It is average. Good enough to operate power plants & steel plants.

Maybe here it doesn't but out in real world it does since I talk facts and business implications of it.

Your 90% production is non coking coal.

And check this link out for carbon richness level for the above grades .. The mean assuming equal distribution is ~30%

we need to cut down on coal & oil. its high time to go full blast on nuke energy. Its tremendous drain on non renewable resource.
