If taken as a single incident, this stand-off will deescalate soon enough. Both China and India will not want to hamper their economic progress for a barren piece of land.

But I don't think it is being taken as yet another border stand-off by Beijing.

It is clear now that India will be a willing partner of US policy of encircling China and as it is the largest country in China's neighborhood with whom they have a border dispute, US will like India to take lead in pressurizing China.

China will not take this lightly. You might call them paper tigers or whatever, but you do know they have the muscle to punish India in a border conflict.

If the current North Korea crisis blew up in some kind of active conflict, even a limited one, I can see China using the current stand off to hit India in the border areas. If US is able to punish China's ally Kim with impunity and China doesn't show its muscle then China will appear weak and other countries in SCS will use it to further their claims with US support.

But if the US is willing to avoid confrontation with NK even after their test of an ICBM that can hit Alaska with a nuke, I don't see China pushing this current stand-off towards an active conflict.
