India will protects its interests in disputed South China Sea: Navy Chief

NEW DELHI: Viewing the rapid modernisation of Chinese Navy as a "major concern", Navy Chief Admiral D K Joshi on Monday made it clear that India will protect its interests in the disputed South China Sea, even if it means sending forces there.

"Yes you are right. The modernisation (of Chinese Navy) is truly impressive... It is a actually a major major cause of concern for us, which we continuously evaluate and work out our options and our strategies," he told a press conference.

The Navy Chief was replying to a question on contingencies in South China sea to protect Indian interests there and impression about the Chinese Navy's modernisation.

Answering a volley of questions about South China Sea over which India had a tiff with China last year, he said although India's presence in that maritime region was not on "very very frequent" basis, it had interests like free navigation and exploitation of natural resources there.

"Not that we expect to be in those waters very very frequently, but when the requirement is there for situations where country's interests are involved, for example ONGC Videsh, we will be required to go there and we are prepared for that. Are we holding exercises for that nature, the short answer is yes," Joshi said.

Talking about Indian interests in the South China Sea, he said the first of it included freedom of navigation.

"Not only us, but everyone is of the view that they have to be resolved by the parties concerned, aligned with the international regime, which is outlined in UNCLOS (United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea), that is our first requirement," he said.

This is the kind of attitude we ought to show quite often we are wanted to be taken seriously.

Get real mate, India doesn't have the expeditionary capability to be of any threat to China in south china sea. Not by a long shot, and probably won't have for decades to come. We barely have enough for our own distant islands.

However, this makes it officially clear that India is going to defend its interests in far flung places, to protect our future oil and gas drilling, to our shipping routes and not just in the IOR. Since we don't expect China to go to war with us over our commercial and energy interests, it is safe to assume that the IN can protect our interests from all other threats, whether pirates or smaller hostile states. The fact that they are going to do that so far away from home itself is very big news and a big jump from the present expeditionary capabilities the IN possesses.

I think it is the first time that the IN has confirmed these intentions.

So instead we should continue with our old Neo Gandhian attitude while dealing with rogue states like China and Pakistan and get kicked around.
The Viets begged you to explore for oil in disputed waters but you turned your back on your ally because you fear PLAN. Our aircraft carrier and J-15 are waiting for target practice :azn:

Indian Navy will intervene in South China sea, if required | NDTV.com

The Indian Navy is practicing to operate in the South China Sea to protect its economic assets.

Speaking to reporters in New Delhi Admiral D K Joshi told reporters that "Where our country's interests are involved, we will protect them and we will intervene."

The Eastern Naval Command - which looks at India's eastern sea board and likely to play a key role when the Navy is deployed in South China Sea- is also being strengthened.

Admiral Joshi said apart from three stealth frigates, the nuclear-powered submarine INS Chakra and INS Jalashva, the amphibious landing ship which is also the biggest platform after INS Viraat, India's lone aircraft carrier.

The decision to use the Navy in the South China Sea comes days after Chinese state media announced that the southern Hainan province, which administers the South China Sea, approved laws giving its police the right to search vessels that pass through the waters. Also Philippines, Vietnam, Taiwan and India protested a map on a new Chinese passport that depicts disputed areas as belonging to China. The Philippines also issued a statement saying it wants Beijing to "clarify its reported plans to interdict ships that enter what it considers its territory in the South China Sea," the Associated Press reported over the weekend.

Admiral D K Joshi said ONGC has 4 oil exploration blocks off the coast of Vietnam. "If required we will intervene to protect (them)," he said and added that it is the navy's duty to protect India's sovereign assets. India, the Admiral said, had two basic concerns- "freedom of navigation in internal waters and protection of our internal assets."

The decision to prepare to intervene in the South China Sea indicates a huge shift in India's Maritime strategy. Previously, India had consistently maintained that Navy's area focus was the vast expanse of sea that lay between the Strait of Hormuz in the Gulf and the Straits of Malacca in the East.

Acknowledging the rapid modernisation of the Chinese navy, the navy chief said "It is actually a major cause of concern for us, which we continuously evaluate and work out our options and our strategies."

The Naval Chief said India will protect its interests that means he is following defensive strategy which is good since India is concentrating on IOR.

No need to worry about SCS since Chinese main trade route is Malacca traits and India is building capabilities there.
