India plans to purchase the Kalibr cruise missiles from Russia, the Russian Izvestia newspaper reports.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Izvestia explains that the Kalibr export version will have a significantly reduced flight distance – as short as 300 kilometers (186 miles]), in order not to violate the provisions of international agreements that prohibit the export of missiles with a greater flight distance. "These will be, essentially, the same missiles as the ones used in Syria," a diplomatic source told the newspaper on Thursday. Last week, a diplomatic source told RIA Novosti that the Russian Black Sea warships equipped with Kalibr cruise missiles will remain in eastern Mediterranean at least until September. The missile ships have carried out several Kalibr launches against the Jabhat Fatah al Sham (also known as Jabhat al-Nusra, or Nusra Front) terrorist group in Syria.

India intends to apply to the Russian Federation with a request for the sale of cruise missiles "Caliber", equipped with the latest high precision guidance system, and capable of striking ground targets. The question of the supply will be discussed during the forthcoming visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to India.

This "News" an informed diplomatic source. Interviewed experts believe that with the advent of the last modification "caliber" of the Indian military will receive a new combat capabilities, as well as be able to prepare to the adoption of the national development of cruise missiles.

The proposal has already been prepared by the Indian side, but will be officially handed over only during the visit of President Vladimir Putin, - said the source of "Izvestia". - It will, in fact, the same rockets that were used in Syria, that is with high precision guidance system, but with a reduced flight range in full compliance with international regulations.

Two Vladimir Putin's visit to India scheduled later this year. In October, the Russian leader will visit Goa at the summit of the BRICS, and he plans to visit Delhi during the summit "Russia-India" closer to the end of the year.

Indian Navy already has a "Calibre" missiles, but only in the anti-shipping, now Delhi wants to get a modification, be used for attacks on militants in Syria. It is distinguished by the presence of a new high precision guidance system, but in the export version of the range will be greatly reduced - up to 300 km, so as not to violate the provisions of international agreements prohibiting the export of missiles with a longer range.
However, experts do not exclude that in the future the Indians themselves can increase the range . Moreover, the emergence of new armed "Caliber" can give an additional impetus to the Indian defense industry.

The Indians are now designing their own medium-range cruise missiles - Nirbhay.

Peter Topychkanov, Program Officer said, "The problems of non-proliferation." - The emergence of "Caliber" will be a great help in terms of the development of technology, understanding of the role of such systems in the forces, the development of operational plans. With the help of "Caliber" will prepare the Indians to the adoption of its own system.

An independent military expert Anton Lavrov said in an interview with "Izvestiya" that high-precision cruise missiles have only a few countries in the world, so that the appearance of new "Caliber" - a landmark stage in the development of the Indian forces.

Strengths
  • "Caliber" - is its high precision and the ability to hit a well-protected objects, including control and air defense facilities centers - Anton Lavrov said. - The most important thing - the effect of surprise. When does air raids, the enemy has time to react, and cruise missiles strike unexpectedly. Plus "Caliber" is an advantage - he can maneuver and go to the target from unexpected directions.
  • The expert drew attention to another important aspect of the export of new cruise missiles.
Feature of "Caliber" -
  • the use of high-precision satellite guidance, and hence, its application requires very close cooperation in the military sphere, as the Indians will have to grant access to the three-dimensional model of the Earth, maps, terrain and military frequencies GLONASS - said Anton Lavrov.
  • Such opportunities do not give to anybody, only the closest allies.

So the Nirbhay tech transfer is now confirmed by addition of Caliber/Kalibr version.. Originally it was said some sections and blue prints were via Club S/N version . Now it looks like further sections from the more modern Caliber will be used to quicken the pace of development.

Once the same is tested under Indian Nirbhay, it will be interesting if these get deployed from our SSKs and SSN/SSBN torpedo tubes..

we will soon see this

Since India is a signatory of MTCR, we shouldn't have problem getting the full range version.

Both Russia & India are now part of MTCR. What does the distance/range matter?

Even if we get the Export version, the blue prints and subsystems can help us make Nirbhay more lethal..

Its a direct giveaway whats happening here

http://www.mtcr.info/english/FAQ-E.html

Are exports to Partners treated differently than exports to non Partners?

The MTCR Guidelines do not distinguish between exports to Partners and exports to non-Partners. Moreover, the MTCR Partners have explicitly affirmed that membership in the Regime provides no entitlement to obtain technology from another Partner and no obligation to supply it. Partners are expected to exercise appropriate accountability and restraint in trade among Partners, just as they would in trade between Partners and non-Partners. Partners are bound by a “no-undercut” policy to consult each other before considering exporting an item on the list that has been notified as denied by another Partner pursuant to the MTCR Guidelines.

We will get export version but what is interesting as i said earlier as well this part , i quote

Moreover it was quite clear when you look at Club missiles and Nirbhay

What i am really interested is what will be the cost of say customizing Scorpenes for Nirbhay and Varunastra/F21 in future..

Dimension wise SM-39 is a bit smaller
sm39x.jpg

IF its practically feasible and since we are yet to build all our scorpenes, (if its feasible again), then i would love to see them together. Bcz this will actually multiple the capability of scorpene multifold..

Imagine if scorpene SSKs can deliver 1000-2000km LACM from its torpedo tubes.. That will be a direct answer to babur SLCM and the new 8 submarines procured by Pakistan Navy. In capability wise it will again be head to head (with AIP in scorpene) and better range enabling a far better capability from long distance engagement away from any troubled waters.

But then may be its too much to ask for..

@PARIKRAMA some errors made here.
Remember our Coastal Defence Program? MoD is in favour of cheaper Klub instead of pricy super sonic BrahMos derivatives.

Plus as Naval Nirbhay is still some time away , so VLS Fired Klub Land Attack Version (3M54TE) was also on the cards.A few were already purchased along with Talwar .

The help from Russia has already happened (3M14K version has a range of near 1500km with very high sub sonic speed, similar to Nirbhay)

With the signing of LEMOA with US, India now needs to do lots of convincing and explanation to Putin to get such critical weapon systems, its going to be very deft diplomacy on indian part

Relationship with Russia is not an issue. We have things running off radar with them

The help from Russia has already happened (3M14K version has a range of near 1500km with very high sub sonic speed, similar to Nirbhay)

Which platform?

Damm I left out another big probability.
Hint :- Guess Klub A (Air Launched version ) and........ Tu22M3.

Which platform?
Means , I didn't get it ?
We have Klubs for Kilos and few Klubs for Talwar. A few more were likely to be ordered to arm other big vessels which seems the likely reason of purchase. If not we have a program running for Coastal Defence Missiles and two Russian Missiles are front runner in the competition along with a 300km Klub M version.

We do not operate the longer range 1500 km Klub version ( not Kaliber ) which posses strikingly similar specifications to Nirbhay. So told that if help is going to come , it has already happened.

This underlines incapability of DRDO to produce Nirbahy in given time. There was talks about making a Mini Nirbhy with similar spec of Klub.

How hard is it to make a subsonic missile if you are calming rights to a supersonic missiles ?
Design a mini nirbhay air frame, import turbojet from french/russian (Microturbo TRI ), initial guidance system from US/France (Talin 2000, Sagem), Use TERCOM developed for Nirbhay, If you want active homing use seeker developed by indian private firm. There you go !

Answer to Babur is an indian made sub sonic cruise missile not something imported.
