At least 126 people are now known to have died after consuming toxic alcohol in India's West Bengal state.

Residents of 12 villages in the South 24 Parganas district fell ill after drinking the alcohol. Seven people have been arrested.

Some 100 other people are being treated in hospital, with fears the death toll could rise. Many died at home, fearing police would take action against them.

Toxic alcohol deaths are a regular occurrence in India.

Last week, the state of Gujarat brought in a new law making the illegal manufacture and sale of toxic alcohol there punishable by death.

Ransacked

The West Bengal state government has ordered a criminal investigation into the deaths.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced compensation for the families of the victims, adding: "I want to take strong action against those manufacturing and selling illegal liquor."

The affected villages are in the Sangrampur, Magrahat, Usthi and Mandirbazar areas.

The villagers drank the locally brewed alcohol on Tuesday evening and despite falling ill many stayed at home fearing police harassment if they went to hospital, reports the BBC's Amitabha Bhattasali in Calcutta.

By Wednesday morning, a large number of people, including two children, had been admitted to hospitals in the area and the nearby city of Calcutta with symptoms of alcohol poisoning.

About 70 people are in a critical condition, state government minister Shyamal Mandal told the BBC.

Medicines and doctors were rushed to the Diamond Harbour hospital in South 24 Parganas.

One doctor, Saikat Kundu, told the BBC that victims were leaving it too late to come to hospital for treatment, unaware of the severity of the problem.

He said: "Some of them are in so bad a condition that we are not getting even time to treat the patient, to run the saline [drip]... People are coming and will take one or two breaths, then the patient is dying."

Anwar Hassan Mullah told the NDTV channel that he had brought six people to hospital and all had died.

"Why don't the police stop this?" he asked. "I cannot understand. What connection do they have [to the bootleggers]?"

Four breweries were ransacked after the deaths began to be reported, Agence France-Presse quoted officials as saying.

Our correspondent, Amitabha Bhattasali, says the illegal breweries are in the Gocharan area and local residents say they operate with impunity, as local authorities do not interfere.

The liquor is packed in cans and delivered all over the district and other parts of the state in buses and on trains. Retailers sell sachets after filling them up with the liquor.

Local NGO workers told the BBC the liquor becomes toxic when it is spiked with ammonium nitrate to "add flavour".

The illegal alcohol - commonly called desi daroo or country-made liquor in India - usually costs as little as 10 rupees (20 US cents) and the majority of the consumers are poor, daily-wage workers.

The tainted liquor can lead to fits, vomiting and death.

India has witnessed many incidents of toxic alcohol deaths.

At least 10 people killed in Tamil Nadu in February 2010
At least 30 people killed in Uttar Pradesh in September 2009
Some 107 people killed in Gujarat in July 2009

Gujarat has taken the strongest action on toxic liquor with its new law which, it says, is intended to deter those involved in the illegal trade.

Gujarat, Mizoram and Nagaland are the only states in India where alcohol is totally prohibited by law.

R.I.P. for the victims. I hope the authorities clamp down heavily on the persons responsible

Some people rather be dead then risk being sober :woot:

Indians want Dawood Ibrahim, because he is associated with the word 'Pakistan'

But they don't care when 126 people die in such incidents and add 80 on top of that from the Hospital fire...it becomes to a whopping figure of 206people.

But no, Indians won't say or do anything about these people, but they still will always question Dawood Ibrahim..........i guess 1 life is not equal to another life in another incident.

RIP to the innocent who died.

.
RIP - Govt. of India & Pak should do something about this.

.
happens every year in Pakistan too......never seen such a death toll though.

wherever it happens, heads should roll. That's a huge and un-necessary loss of life. Ammonium nitrate is one thing that is NOT supposed to enter the human body.

why do they need bootleg liquor in india anyways?? there's no prohibition

your comparison is irrelevent to the topic.
Sure the State Government of WB has learned its leason for being linient on the illegal liqor production and distribution.
But the problem lies with the Police Department, who took hefty bribes to turn blind eye on these illegal business.
I hope all those responsible including government staffs should and will be punished for their involvement and lack of action against this illegal liqor rackets.

its because of the cost, liqors by approved brewaries are costlier when compared to the once that are illegally made.
But I prefer Coconut toddy to any Vijamalaya product.

LOL.. DO you know how many people are killed in accidents everyday in Pakistan.. Why dont you guys go after people who caused those accidents rather than screaming on NATO for killing 28 soldiers.. i guess 1 life is not equal to another life in another incident.

Karan - about 6 months ago 4 guys died in the North of England because they were running an illegal distillery as they were attempting to make cheap liquor. Many people ended up in hospital by drinking what they had made but no fatalities. Just the ones making it. Ther have been many incidents of dodgy alchohol in Poland and other european countries. Problem isnt exclusive to India.
Really unfortunate that the victims of this sad event are at the poor end of the financial scale and were probably looking at this as a cheap way to have a good time. All sad and lets pray for the victims. Hope lessons are learnt
