It is now completely unacceptable to majority of Hindus and other Indians as well. In NE Tribal areas, it used to be done till few decades back.
Few people come under the influence of tantriks and voodoo magicians and engage in this kind of crime.

An educated person is less likely to fall to sales pitch of a tantrik or voodoo practitioner.

But, you are right to an extent. Even highly educated people in advanced societies have cults that engage in it. It is like all sins. Education can do only this much. Nothing beyond.
