India to test-fire Advanced Air Defence missile today

At least 3,000 people from six villages near a defence base in Orissa have been shifted to temporary camps as India plans to conduct an interceptor missile test Sunday.

The Advanced Air Defence missile (AAD) will be fired from the Wheeler Island off Dhamra coast in Bhadrak district. It will destroy an incoming missile fired from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur on sea in Balasore district.

"Officials have shifted about 3,000 people living within 2 km radius of the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur to temporary camps," Balasore district Superintendent of Police Rajesh Kumar told a news agency.

"We have also deployed about 120 armed policemen in the area and engaged two mobile patrolling units to maintain law and order and prevent entry of unauthorised persons to the area," he said.

Its near wheeler Island so that the missile is fired over the sea and its flight path is not over land which can cause a lot of problem.

That is not a tribal area, I am from the same place
This is the best location for these kind of tests, as at this kind of sea atmosphere you can test verious other parameters than land, and the island in talk(wheeler island) is actually free of human occupation, its just the neighbouring places they will evacuate.

Wheeler Island is located approximately 10 kilometers off of the East coast of India on the Bay of Bengal and about 70 kilometers south of Chandipur in Orissa province. The island is approximately 2 kilometers long and occupies about 390 acres. Wheeler Island is the missile test facility for the AGNI (Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile (IRBM).

Access to the test facility is by ship as there is no bridge or airport connecting the island to the mainland. There is a small helipad, but missile airframes and all supplies, construction materials and heavy equipment arrives by ship.

The test facility consists of a launch pad, missile assembly/checkout buildings, and several administrative, and support buildings. Missile airframes are transported from the pier to the launch pad by a 2.3 kilometer long rail line, that connects the missile assembly buildings.

Seven new buildings have been indentified since May 31, 2000 including three probably missile assembly/support buildings, and a probable headquarters or administration building.

A possible AGNI II missile airframe is visible in the most recent Ikonos imagery dating October 27, 2001.

Several structures including the launch pad, the helipad, and some of the support buildings have been painted in a vein attempt at camaflage. Detection of the missile test facility is possible at 15-meter GSD. A 1-meter GSD, the paint pattern only draws attention to structures the Indians are attempting to hide

Technical snag delays missile shield test

The test-fire of the indigenous Advanced Air Defence (AAD) missile has been postponed. The AAD missile was to be test-fired today (March 14) from Chandipur in Orissa. It is now likely to be test-fired on Monday.

Defence sources say that the AAD missile is capable of destroying any hostile ballistic missile. The missile shield is meant to protect major cities, nuclear power stations, space facilities and military installations.

A target missile will first be lifted off a mobile launcher in Chandipur and the interceptor AAD missile will then be blasted off Wheeler Island about 70 km across away. The seven meter long rocket-propelled missile is expected to be deployed into defence system by 2016.

Report by Karunakar Sahoo, Balasore: India to test indigenously designed and developed Advanced Air Defence (AAD) missile from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) off Orissa coast on Sunday.The target missile, a modified indigenously built 'Prithvi' posing as an enemy missile, lifted off from a mobile launcher from the ITR at Chandipur-on-sea and the interceptor AAD missile using a radio frequency seeker on-board blasted off from Wheeler Island about 70 km across the sea from Chandipur. It was orginally sheduled to test on Sunday Morning 10 am but Interceptor missile test postponed till 2 pm today.

This will be the fourth such test being carried out by scientists of the Defence Research and Development Organisation. At least 3,000 ( 2474 adult and 746 minors of 400 families of 5 villages have been shifted to temporary camps at Khadipahi School, and Kalimandap. They will provide Rs 130/- per Adult members, Rs 65/- to each minors , Rs 25/- each for Fooding and Rs 10/- and Rs 5/- for entertainment . They will also be provided Rs 10/- for each animals. The Defence department has provided Rs 7 lakh to the district administration for the purpose.

As you know, India has a big population problem. Infact population control is the number one challenge for India today. The number two challenge is terrorism sponsered from across the borders.
So, by doing this missile testing in populated area, atleast one of the challenge is addresed. If the missile fails, the population problem is taken care of to some extent .. and if the test suceeds .....
Thats called shooting 2 birds with one arrow err.. missile..
