India to rush troops to Ladakh if no de-escalation on face-off

NEW DELHI: India may be

major show of force and resolve"

has led certain quarters in the defence
establishment to speculate whether it would
require another Operation Falcon\Chequerboard-
like endeavour to resolve the tangle. It was in late 1986 that the Indian Army had
launched Operation Falcon after PLA's "deep
intrusions" into the Sumdorong Chu Valley of
Arunachal Pradesh in June that year. India

exercise in the northeast in early-1987, even as
the two sides reinforced force-levels in the
region. Finally, towards mid-1987, intense
diplomatic engagement had led to the face-off
being resolved. Incidentally, the forward deployment of troops under Operation Falcon
continues to this day.

This is a case of two adolescents checking out each other.
@Secur is right to say that India & China both need each other and the last thing they need is an escalation. Unless China wants to give a message to its Eastern & Southern neighbors by a display of bellicosity to its strongest neighbor.

The GOI is under immense internal pressure...if this is not resolved quickly then it will get us into that group..escort us right in. The opposition party here has been famously pro US..already DBO sector specific air assets are mobilizing- our forces are camped just 300 meters away from the 50 member Chinese group. Hopefully we will not have to open fire..at the moment that's all I can say.

Dillinger , I am not sure if a common Indian even cares about the episode . I take it that by internal pressure , you are pointing towards the opposition parties . What steps are being taken to resolve it ? Is there another flag meeting planned ? I remember its 8 days now since they came . I know about your forces though I doubt that they will open fire anytime soon . This can escalate further , remember the upcoming visit of the Chinese premier to New Dehli ?

Nope, both sides have counter patrols..the LAC has no demarcations so both sides end up patrolling till their claim lines, which mean that Chinese forces do end up "getting in"...but this is highly unusual..there have been such incursions from both sides but they last no more than a day or two..pro forma protests are lodged by both sides and the story ends there. It is highly unusual for two flag meetings to turn up to be inconclusive.

Could someone point out on a map where's Depsang Bulge located in Ladakh?

If that helps , the current face-off is very close to the Siachin sector and the LOC .

Yaara..the common man does care..that's whats changed..two flag meetings have been conducted..right now we've shadowed them using only ITBP..but protocol would require us to now bring in soldiers from the army itself..that is when things get hairy.

To pull back, China wants India to give up its posts

To pull back, China wants India to give up its posts - Indian Express

China has asked the Indian Army to destroy certain fortified positions in the so-called disputed territory in eastern Ladakh in return for the PLA removing its temporary camp in Depsang valley, now at the centre of a military face-off.

Sources said a flag meeting on Tuesday — the second since the Chinese incursion on April 15 — failed after the Chinese side made its demand. The Indian side was not willing to make a commitment, and that led to an impasse, the sources said.

The sources said that Indian fortifications that have come up recently in eastern Ladakh are in an area different from the one where the current faceoff is taking place. No official word was forthcoming on the flag meeting.

Emerging new details of the situation in the Depsang valley show that the standoff was triggered by a series of five transgressions by troops of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) on April 15, including a border crossing by a Chinese military helicopter. India on Tuesday described the situation as being "face to face", but expressed hope of a peaceful resolution.

Sources said that hours before Chinese troops pitched three tents in the valley on April 15, a chopper was seen overhead, possibly flying in support of the soldiers. Officials said Tuesday that Chinese troops were at Raki Nala, 10 km inside India's perception of the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

The sources said that on the night of April 15, a group of Chinese soldiers engaged Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) personnel for a few hours before retreating. Another group of soldiers, however, used the distraction to put up three tents on disputed territory about three kilometres away.

The ITBP discovered these tents only the next morning. Around 30 Chinese soldiers armed with light machine guns are said to be present in the tents. The nearest ITBP camp is at Burste, 20 km away.

I hope you realize that we both have posts there eye ball to eye ball..that is the whole problem..they say our post is an occupation force and we say the same about theirs.

Lets wait and watch . Its too early to give a opinion about anything at the moment .

Yes, thanks.

Just found it on Google Maps. It's in the Depsang Plain, east of the Shahi Kangri Mountain. Very close to the Siachin area.

This has happened before just once...we had to send in heliborne troops that time..ergo my opinion. Fingers crossed..this could end up marring the 93 and 96 treaties..not a good sign.

@Dillinger

Check the link @third eye just posted , very confusing chain of events it is reporting .

I was under the impression that no fighting took place , but it says they " engaged " .

This wasn't the only tent erected inside the LAC .

This could well be an attempt to meet from a position of ' strength' during the impending visit of the Chinese next month,
