India to protest China letter to West Bengal​

India plans to take up with China the demand it made to the West Bengal chief secretary that the state governor and chief minister stay away from a function in Kolkata being addressed by the Dalai Lama. This comes just days after Beijing postponed the latest round of border talks, scheduled to start Monday (November 28) in the Capital, over New Delhi’s refusal to accede to its demand that a Buddhist convention the Tibetan spiritual leader was to address be cancelled. The Dalai Lama addressed that meet Wednesday.

The two neighbours are still on for the bilateral military dialogue on December 9 in New Delhi, though. China's representative, Ma Xiaotian, deputy chief of general staff of the People's Liberation Army of China, is to get his visa on December 7.

On Thursday, ignoring Chinese objections, governor MK Narayanan attended the function in Kolkata. Refusing to comment on the letter from the Chinese consulate, he said, "What do you expect me to do? If they have written, they have written."

Chief minister Mamata Banerjee didn’t make it though on account of her mother’s illness, but sent Trinamool Congress MP Derek O’ Brien in her place.

In its letter to the chief secretary, Beijing implied that the governor and chief minister's presence at the meet would amount to an endorsement of the Dalai Lama's "anti-China" position.

The Centre plans to object to China's breach of protocol in sending the missive to the state chief secretary when the normal channel for such communication is the foreign ministry.

On his part, the Dalai Lama said, "The Chinese consider my activities anti-China activity. This has become routine."

"The Chinese government thinks I am a demon. Actually, they are childish. I may be a demon but not a bad one."

IMHO, the governer and Chief Minister of West Bengal should attend this conference just to prove a point to China.

Although, I do believe that China does have a point. I wouldn't like China to host a conference of Kashmiri seperatists either.

But then these issues should be discussed between the Chinese govt. and Indian govt. CPC should not have blatantly bypassed the GoI and written a letter directly to West Bengal governer. This is very unbecoming of a great power like China.

These pressure tactics might work with Mongolia, Sudan or Congo or whatever. They won't work with India. India is far more powerful than Iran and China is not even the US. When Iran can show the middle finger to the US, India can do a lot of other things than showing just the middle finger.

Chinese are smart people, no doubt.

Only a smart civilization can survive for thousands of years, just like we have survived.

However, the recent and new-found power seems to have gotton to the heads of the CPC top brass.

More power should have made Chinese leaders more humble, instead they have become more arrogant.

They do not seem to be doing a great justice to the great civilization they represent.

Sir, the point is why CPC is behaving in such an arrogant manner?

As far as HH is concerned, he will have to attain nirvana in India only. Since CPC doesn't seem to want to be seen yielding an inch to a monk.

I agree that at times he might have said things discomforting to China. However, being the great nation that China is, it should not have to bother too much for what a monk says, should it?

Many years China and Dalai lama have engaged in Talks on his return however most failed to produce a solution, who don't know yet what the future will produce. and Dalai lama said that China is destroying Buddhism how can china destroy Buddhism ? we have been influenced by Buddhism it has survived before lama and After. The Lama has done alot of things to upset us and demonize china and it's things like these etc etc. maybe one day Lama can visit Tibet, through the right process through China but until that day comes we have to see.
