India to produce 1.1% more power than necessary this fiscal

Surplus is better than deficit....People's demand will eventually grow.

Issue is not supply and demand of electricity. Both will naturally increase with time. The issue is maintaining an efficient market for electricity where supply and demand can be met.

While India seems to have solved the problem of electricity generation and transmission, we have not solved electricity distribution. The latter is by and large a state subject and sadly state distribution companies are a mess. So even though we have a lot of demand and some excess supply, the two don't balance out. Power plants are deliberately running at lower capacity, while consumers suffer power cuts.

Very good point. While the central govt is less corrupted and more efficient, state govt. have ruined India. Their inefficiency and corruption cannot be put down in words. Fundamental changes are required to whip the state govt to perform better

I don't know why people even worry about it....
Look at the number of A/C in India.
India is actually much hotter than China....But we have way more A/C than India...
60 million A/C were sold in 2013....And electricity consumption of A/C can be as high as 40% during summer.
I think A/C and A/C-related electricity consumption will be a major focus in India....

The number of CDDs in India is one of the biggest...

Automation is driving prices of A/C down

Technology of A/C is maturing

I guess you won't need A/C for heating in -30 degree environment....

That figure will improve as per-capita income increases

UDAY is gonna change that

Transmission?
China is still working on it.

Not very sure on that. The jury is still out.

Basic idea of the UDAY scheme is to make State governments take over the debt of the discoms. This effectively reverses the 1990s reforms where discoms were (somewhat) independent from state-government meddling. My worry is that moving discoms back to state-control may worsen the state government balance sheet, without any improvement in discoms.

We shall see...

By definition all development is a work in progress, especially in a developing country like India. However, on balance generation and transmission are less of a bottleneck than distribution. In 2014, India completed the "One Nation One-grid One-Frequency" program, which interconnected all of the 5 regional grids in India. This makes India one of the largest synchronous grids in the world with a current capacity > 300GW (August 2016). We also have fairly good capacity and connectivity. In terms of technology we are moving towards 1200kV HVDC, which is pretty much state of the art.

Bottomline: India has made reasonable progress in electricity generation and transmission, unfortunately not in distribution.
