India to join `Friends of Syria` in Tunisia

New Delhi: Indicating a change in Indian position vis-à-vis Syria, New Delhi has decided to send a senior diplomat to attend the ‘Friends of Syria’ conference scheduled to be held in Tunis on Friday.

Western and Arab powers are meeting in Tunis and will reportedly call on Syria to "immediately to cease all violence" and pledge to deliver humanitarian supplies within 48 hours if Damascus "stopped its assault on civilian areas and permitted access”.

The meeting in Tunisia, the country where the Arab Spring erupted more than a year ago, brings together foreign ministers from more than 50 countries in the first gathering of the "Friends of Syria" after almost a year of protests against the rule of President Bashar al-Assad.

The group includes the United States, European Union countries and Arab and Muslim nations. Russia and China, which have both vetoed measures against Damascus at the United Nations, are not attending.

From India, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs in charge of West Asia and North Africa, Rajeev Shahare, will be going to Tunis.

Shahare was part of the delegation led by Minister of State for External Affairs E Ahamed at the ‘Friends of Somalia’ conference in London.

According to reports, India’s role at the conference would be an “observational” one.

Since the outbreak of the Arab Spring in 2011, India has maintained a calculated silence towards the Middle East.

Good to see atleast now we are sending delegation to this kind of event.

But it would be more helpful we could have called both Party's to the conference (Govt and opposition)

They have only called the opposition thats bad and don't know the moto behind it.

Not a good idea. Syria is a mess, just like Libya, and there are folks arming and inciting the opposition, which includes Al Qaeda terrorists. Assad has offered an election, and that is the way forward.

Very disturbing news.

very nice to hear that India also takes a side and shows that no one can butcher innocent people and go away with it.

more and more people support the right that the Syrian people demand, FREEDOM!

yet those assad supporters think they will win!

India joins the Enemies of Syria Group.
What a shame!!

This is to compensate our stand on Iran. We can't just oppose every move by majority of western countries..
We have to show our interest in their concerns and we are doing it diplomatically ... and any how how you will explain killing of 5 or 3 year old.. those are also terrorist for Assad ?

The goal should be to sit in every international discussion room. India lost an opportunity when it missed out joining the OIC. Let there be no mistakes in the future. If you are in the discussion room, chances are that people in the room will not try to huddle and trouble you, because you are one among them. At least there will be an advance warning.

NEVER IN DOUBT!

puppets always follow their white masters.

if this is not enough proof that india is 100% controlled by the west, then i dont know what will.

i have said only russia, china and america are the only 3 independent countries, others are just puppets of each of these 3 great powers.

india is ofcourse under the control of america, india has absolutely no choice but to obey its masters orders.
india has no independent foreign policy.
