India plans to increase defense spending by 17 percent for the next financial year, as the country seeks to modernize its armed forces to keep pace with Chinas military buildup and counter traditional rivals.
Total expenditure on the countrys armed services is set to rise to 1.93 trillion rupees ($40 billion) this year, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee told parliament today as his delivered the countrys annual budget. China announced plans last month to increase spending by 11.2 percent this year to meet the countrys expanding global commitments.
Indias internal security threats and rivalries with Pakistan and China, the nuclear-armed neighbors with which it has border disputes, have driven a tripling in defense spending over the last decade.
India, which is the worlds largest arms importer, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, is currently negotiating with Dassault Aviation SA (AM) to buy 126 warplanes in the worlds biggest fighter-jet purchase in 15 years.

Translation: buy even more foreign weapons.
unlike russia, india have no domestic military industry where in an arms race the money goes directly into building indigenous weapons. instead, india will have to buy every single piece of weapon from foreign countries.
india is going the way of the soviet union, minus the indigenous military industrial complex and minus the global influence.
Most of this is going to the indigenous projects that we have as well as co-development projects. Just because you don't know the projects doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Airavat, AMCA, Bhim, Arjun Mk3, LCH mass production, additional Arihant submarines, 2 indigenous aircraft carriers, multiple stealth frigates and destroyers..etc. All this costs money you know.
