India to build 6,000 MW nuke plant in Andhra Pradesh

Strategic reasons in times of war. A F-16 is less likely to bomb a plant in Kerala than in Rajasthan.

That's why there is an agreement b/w Pakistan & India that no country will attack others nuclear facility at the times of war, & both country's exchange lists of there nuclear facilities every year on 1st Jan, this CBM has a long history & has been carried out even at the times of tensions b/w the two countries like the post parliament attack etc.

And you expect them to honor something like that?

There are a lot of agreements signed between us but don't see them living upto them.

Why these reactors are not built in NE and north India?? One may say Nairobi is there but it is "ancient" and is not having new technology?

We have a lot of hydel energy capacity here. Only problem is, it is not channelized well due to blatant corruption and central government's mismanagement.

Not really. One is under construction in Fatehabad, Haryana.

The projects are awarded based on geography(less siesmic activity, closeness to sea are obvious +s), population density and some political factors. For example, West Bengal will take a while before it gets any projects that require land collection. Also AP has a Congress government. So I guess it is easier to manage. While there is scope for partisanship in this allocation, the state government can always reject the setting up of a project. In the given context, this power plant will make AP power surplus state from a power deficit state. These years the load shedding in the state is said to be worse than that Karachi faces. The rural areas face an average of 10 hours power cut during summer. And the state has an industrial base that is facing severe power and water shortage.
As for why UP is not getting such projects, the answer is UP does not have heavy industry expansion. Power projects are driven by industry and not domestic consumption.

In a total war situation, all this amounts to squat.

If its on border then there are two advantage...
1.India can share power with pakistan easily.
2.It wont be attacked by pakistan for fear of fallout in pakistani areas.

Well, wind directions will play a crucial role...
If someone have studied geography, the wind direction for the summers is from Arabian Sea + Bay of Bengal towards Punjab Plains/Himalayas and during winters moist wind from mediterranean makes it way through Khyber pass into Northern Indian planes..

In case of nuclear fallout, even if god forbid, we bomb pakistan to stone age, the winters in north India will be a nuclear winter. There will be no summer for north India per se.. same holds for pakistan during summers..

As long as the nuclear powerplant is hooked into the power grid, it does not matter where this nuclear plant lies. For that matter, India and SL have plans to share excess power between themselves.

a distant possibility.. FYI the power situation down south is HORRIBLE !!! Mostly, that statement was a euphemism for India importing power from SLK.

Also, Indian transmission Infrastructure hasn't matured enough.. We are still in the era of Big Regional Grids which is lightly interconnected.. A full fledged National GRID is what power ministry is working on presently. Currently we have only 700KV transmission capability on a line but we will soon come up with 1100KV transmission capability.. That will give a fillip to our FULLY integrated Power GRID !!

Agreed - I should have qualified by statement properly. As long as it is in the northern grid. If you look at the northern grid it covers almost all of North India and Orissa.

As for the SL, it is expected next year but might get delayed.

FYI,

Evaluating station post insulator performance from electric field calculations

might be of some help for tech savvy people !!

what is interesting is the some of the countries trying to come up with UHV transmission capability.. Tiny countries like Italy, Venezuela, South Africa are investing huge amounts in it whereas huge countries like CHina and India are still trying to cope !!

For India, this Only Thing is holding off so many UMPPs in Arunachal and Uttaranchal !!

ps. Forgive the mistake.. the transmission is measured in KV and power in KVA. KV is the correct unit. I have corrected my post.

Eh it is good that nuclear power plant are far away from NE;)
MEGA dams are being built in arunachal and some more are being planned all around NE that should make us power surplus (if implemented properly:what:)

Well there are 3 basic considerations for setting a nuclear plant.
1. There should not be a seismic center within 50 kms of proposed site.
2. Availability of water. The logic here is that, a 1000 MWe reactor will actually generate close to 3500 MW thermal heat. The remaining 2500 MWt will be discharged to sea or river or lake at low temperature (unusable enthalpy).
3. To the extent possible the site should be away from population center for ease of emergency planning.
The 2 reason actually puts an advantage if plant is situated next to a sea coast.
