NEW DELHI: India thanked Dhaka for its decision to honour Indian nationals and groups for their role in the 1971 war that led to the birth of Bangladesh.

External Affairs Minister SM Krishna has written to his Bangladeshi counterpart Dipu Moni, expressing the government's sentiments.

Krishna said the "cause of liberation of Bangladesh has been very close to our hearts, and the government and the people of India have been extremely proud of their association with the historic liberation war".
According to official sources, Krishna said the Bangladeshi initiative would "further strengthen the friendship" between the people of the two countries.

This will also have a significant impact in preserving memories in the mind of the young and in educating future generations, he wrote.

Last year, Bangladesh conferred the Bangladesh Freedom of Honour posthumously on Indira Gandhi, who was prime minister when Pakistan and India fought the 1971 war.

Last week, Bangladesh honoured a host of Indians and Indian organisations for their contribution to the 1971 war which included, among others, Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, Lt. Gen. Jagjit Singh Aurora, Lt. Gen. J.F.R. Jacob and Arundhati Ghose.

Bangladesh celebrated its 41st independence day Monday with rich tributes to war heroes.

On March 26, 1971, the people of then East Pakistan began a military campaign against Pakistani armed forces following largescale killings of civilians opposed to Islamabad.

The civil war led to the eventual India-Pakistan war in December 1971, leading to the break-up of Pakistan and the birth of Bangladesh.

On Monday, Bangladesh President Zillur Rahman, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and opposition leader Khaleda Zia laid wreaths at the National Monument at Savar, some 30 km north of capital Dhaka.

Thank you Bangladesh..... :kiss3:

it is a disgrace....she was a thief who seized her opportunity to divide her enemy...

and why should i be grateful??its not like indira gandhi helped bd for bd's interest....she helped bd for her own countries interest like i already said....now if a man saves a drowning lady with the intention of emotionally blackmailing her to having sex, does that make the man a hero and should the woman be grateful??dont think so....

and on a lighter note, if the woman enjoys the sex as well, its a win win all around.. Woman's life is save, she has a good time, man has a good time.. every one goes home happy..

In any case, the point is that she helped bd. At a time when nobody else did.

Actually she created bd. Bd did not exist before India helped the people there.

Next time there is a systematic massacre going on, you should send out flyers to all powerful countries demanding help, but strictly telling them that they should help only if they are selfless.

And its not like BD had huge oil reserves that india was eager to exploit, is it? It was a dirt poor nation (no offence, all the countries involved were poor) and I don't know what immense benefit bangladesh has given in return, for the blood and treasure India sacrificed.

So don't make it sound as if BD was a very resource rich country that India helped, only to exploit later on.

I won't call you ungrateful like the other posters, since I can't be sure you really are from bd, and not somebody from another country behaving like a sore loser.

listen man i cant give you any verified sources for this, but come to bd and ask anyone.lots of our money end up in india.with no reason.there are also other cases.its been reported that nickel has been found in the cox's bazaar area in abundance, but the govt. wont extract it.its been leaked that india has pressured the govt. into not extracting it.also the nuclear power plant.india is saying no to the idea of bd with nuclear capabilities, civilian or military.dont believe me if thats what you feel like, ill actually understand.and no we werent oil rich, but west and east pakistan posed a real threat to india, and india siezed the oppurtunity to divide.the reward wasnt oil,it was the enemy getting divided into two,and the new country becoming a satellite country for india.....

and fyi i am from bd,i just have my own views on certain things.
