Cockroaches scare the ladies away!
BHUBANESWAR: Players of Australia, New Zealand and South Africa women's cricket teams left the Odisha Cricket Association (OCA) red-faced on Thursday. The ladies all walked out of the low budget hotel where they had been put up, with sources saying the ladies were upset with poor room service and cockroaches!
OCA functionaries were reluctant to explain the reason behind the sudden decision to shift about 90 players and officials from one hotel to another. However, sources told TOI the move to transfer the players to a new hotel began on Wednesday after some women panicked upon seeing cockroaches making merry in their rooms.
"We received information from the OCA on Wednesday night about the complaint lodged by some foreign players over poor service. One of the players was said to have seen a cockroach in her room. They wanted to leave the hotel immediately," said a police officer on condition of anonymity.
Bhubaneswar deputy commissioner of police (DCP) Nitinjeet Singh said all players have been relocated amid tight security. "Security has been tightened in the new hotel where they were shifted," Singh said. When contacted, the hotel authorities denied any deficiency in service.
"We offered the best hospitality to the players. The room service and food was good," said J B Das, general manager of Empires hotel at Saheed Nagar. Das said initially 45 rooms were booked for the players. "On Wednesday evening the OCA wanted 20 more rooms. We declined as our hotel has only 58 rooms," Das said.
Sources said each room was shared by two players. The rooms, each with a per-day tariff of Rs 5000, were booked from Jan 30 to February 7.
