BALASORE (ORISSA): India on Monday successfully test fired the Astra air-to-air missile from its Integrated Test Range (ITR) off the Orissa

The beyond visual range air-to-air missile was tested at the Chandipur test range at about 9.45am.

India tests missile that jams ground radars

BHUBANESWAR (Reuters) - India successfully tested on Monday an air-to-air missile that can jam ground radar systems, a senior defence scientist said.

The missile which has a range of 25 km (15 miles) can be fitted into any fighter aircraft and is known as the Astra (weapon), S.P. Dash, head of the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Orissa said.

"It was a very good flight. The test was conducted to prove the control system," Dash told Reuters, after the missile hit targets accurately.
The success comes after a string of failures last year in which several missiles failed to meet the expected parameters during routine tests.

India Test-Fires BVR Air-To-Air 'Astra' Missile
1/11/2010 3:48 AM ET

(RTTNews) - India on Monday test-fired an indigenously developed and beyond visual range (BVR) short-range air-to-air missile from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur-on-sea in the eastern Indian state of Orissa.

The 'Astra,' meaning weapon in Sanskrit, was test-fired fired from a specially-made launcher in the launch pad No. 2 of the ITR complex at about 9.45 am in Chandipur, 143 miles (230) km north-east pf the state capital Bhubaneswar, defense sources from the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), which developed the missile, said.

After thorough data analysis of the flight test, another test is expected to be conducted later Monday, they said.

According to the sources, before being made fully operational, the complex missile system will undergo some more trials, though tests on its navigation, control, air frame, propulsion and other sub-systems have been validated.

The single-stage solid fuel 'Astra,' capable of carrying a 15 kg conventional warhead, is a high-end tactical missile and is envisaged to intercept enemy aircraft at supersonic speeds in head-on mode at a range of 50 miles (80 km) and in tail-chase mode at 12 miles (20 km).

It is more advanced in its category than the contemporary BVR missiles and is also capable of engaging and destroying highly maneuverable supersonic aerial targets.:yahoo:

Defense scientists said the BVR missile is likely to be ready for introduction into the military's arsenal by 2011.
