Report by Odisha Diary bureau, Bhubaneswar: Supersonic interceptor missile test-fired today from a test range at Chandipur off Odisha coast. New interceptor missile test-fired at 9.11am from a test range in Chandipur.

It should be noted that surface-to-air supersonic indigenously built Akash missile was test fired in quick succession twice at 11.55am and 12pm from integrated test range from Chandipur-on-sea under Balasore district on Saturday.

Both the times the missile targeted a toe body supported by pilot less target aircraft Lakshya and the test was carried out as part of a user trial by the Indian Air Force, defence sources said.

With a strike range of 25 km and warhead carrying capacity of 60 kgs, Akash can target aircraft up to 30 km away and is packed with a battery that can track and attack several targets simultaneously. Experts have compared Akash to the MIM-104 Patriot missile system of USA, defence sources added.

India on Sunday successfully test-fired a new interceptor missile capable of neutralising any incoming long-range missile at higher altitude. The interceptor, positioned at launch pad IV of Integrated Test Range at Wheeler Island, about 100 km from Balasore, roared into the sky at about 9.10 am to hit its target.

The target, mimicking an incoming enemy missile, was first test fired from a naval ship at 9.06 am and after getting signals from the radars, the interceptor went into action.

"The trial was conducted successfully and all the mission objectives were met," DRDO Spokesman Ravi Kumar Gupta told PTI over phone.

The details of the 'kill effect' of the interceptor missile were analysed after retrieving all the data from various radars and telemetry stations, an official said.

Earlier Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), which is the premier agency to develop such a sophisticated interceptor, had successfully tested six interceptor missiles developed by it, both in endo-atmosphere (within 30 km altitude above sea level and exo-atmosphere stage (above 30 km altitude).

The Prithvi Air Defence interceptor missile has already demonstrated its killing capability at an altitude of 50 km and 80 km while the Advanced Air Defence interceptor missile has smashed the target missile at an altitude of 15 km to 30 km.

Now the target is to achieve the interception at an altitude of above 100 km of a long range missile,

This news is about interceptor missile

which is a great achievement....
it gives us capability to neutralize missiles with target range of around 2500 km ...which is what Pakistan has got ....so far !

The crapiest reporting I've seen.

Indeed . Akash and Interceptor missile are being quoted in same breath ..as if they are interchangeable or related .

would be great to see footage of interception !
Guess it will have to wait ....

Here is the footage of Previous launch ( 2013) which intercepted missile at 30 km .

Prithvi Air Defence ( which is different from Prithvi Defence Vehicle that is being tested )

EngineTwo Stage
Propellant Liquid fuel propelled first stage with two propellants and oxidizers, solid fuel propelled second stage with gas thruster.
Flight altitude75-150 km
Speed >Mach 5
Guidance
system Inertial Navigation System
Ground-based mid-course correction
Active radar homing (Terminal phase)
Launch
platform Tatra TEL 8 x 8

It's the PAD interceptor missile which is based on Prithvi 2 NLOS-BSM (and hence the liquid fuelled first stage),not the PDV.
PDV is supposed to be a solid fuelled missile.

Indeed I clarified already . It could be source of confusion ( as I was confused initially )

PDV is supposed to intercept at 150 km and above ....so what we have tested now PAD or PDV ?

On second thought ...this is most likely to be PDV rather than PAD .

And Nirbhay Cruise missile test :)

This month is a missile festival ....
