After over two years in the works, the Indian government has finally signed up with the U.S. for six more Lockheed-Martin C-130J Super Hercules special mission transports. The deal, a direct government to government contract, is said to be worth just under $1.1 billion. The aircraft will be with minor modifications. Details shortly.

Not much of a news though, since these additional 6 for the 2nd squadron that will be raised in the east was announced by IAF some time ago. Sadly final decision in India takes longer and therefor can include price increases too, the first order was around $900 million only.

This deal is on entirely expected lines. They will be a great asset in the East and North-East; which will be able to fly into most of the existing and projected ALGs in the region; leaving the "last-mile delivery" to Helos such as the Mi-17s and later the Chinooks. In effective terms these aircraft will be tremendous force-multipliers. Though I can envisage another requirement for a further tranche; but I guess that GoI is somewhat juggling resources. Time that they get cracking on the Chinooks now.
