India should have sought Sri Lanka's suspension from Commonwealth: BJP - The Economic Times

CHENNAI: Expressing support to the cause of protecting Sri Lankan Tamils, BJP today said India should have demanded Sri Lanka's suspension from the Commonwealth for alleged human rights violations and urged the country not to participate in the next CHOGM.

"India should have taken the initiative to bring to the notice of the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group over the violation of human rights and sought the suspension of Sri Lanka," senior BJP leader Yashwant Sinha said, addressing a party meeting here.

Accusing the Centre of "inept" handling of the Sri Lankan Tamils issue, he said "India did nothing of that kind (to seek the suspension of Sri Lanka)."

He alleged that without the complicity of the Indian government, the "genocide" of Tamils in the island nation would not have occurred.

Echoing the sentiments of political parties in Tamil Nadu which have been demanding that India boycott the upcoming CHOGM to be held in Sri Lanka in November, he said he was also not in favour of the country's participation.

"The government of India should tell the Commonwealth Secretary General that it would not be possible for India to attend it in Sri Lanka. If India says we are not going to Sri Lanka, there will be no CHOGM. Will Prime Minister Manmohan Singh show this courage?" he said.

Making his party's stand clear on the country not attending CHOGM in Sri Lanka, the former External Affairs Minister said "I say, 'No' with a capital N and O."

He advocated that India should press for action against Sri Lanka in the Commonwealth as it enjoyed a strong say in the body. "There is no Commonwealth without India. India is the pivot of Commonwealth."

I really enjoyed Mr.Sinha's speech in the RS on this issue and he has again spoken in support of the SL Tamils. Also good to know that its the official stand of the party. As he asks, "Will the PM show the courage?"

Liberals Call for Boycott of Sri Lankan CHOGM « tamilweek.com/news-features

TORONTO– Liberal Leader Bob Rae made the following statement today on the upcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Colombo, Sri Lanka:

“The situation on the ground in Sri Lanka is showing no signs of improvement, and the Rajapaksa regime’s disrespect for human rights and democracy continues unabated. No serious effort has been made by that government to reconcile with all actors in Sri Lankan society.

There is neither truth nor reconciliation after the end of the civil war. Ethnic and religious discrimination is growing, not decreasing. Attacks on journalists and opposition politicians are getting worse and more lethal. The abuse of the rule of law is increasing; the impeachment of the country’s Supreme Court Chief Justice was a deep abuse of power.

The situation has escalated to such a degree that Canada can no longer in good conscience attend the upcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Colombo. The Sri Lankan regime has not earned the right to host this international summit, and we urge other states to boycott the meeting and push for a change of venue.

The Commonwealth is too important to allow its business to be disrupted by a single rogue member’s violation of the association’s beliefs and values. Canada must work with other member states to create stronger mechanisms to deal with governments failing to uphold the Commonwealth’s shared commitment to democracy, human rights and the rule of law.”

Atleast Canada has some concern for its less than 1% population's sentiments while India does not have any concern for 70 million of its population's emotions but basically fanning its own fears masked by the talks of some strategy.

He is asking too much. I am waiting for the last 9 years for the PM to show courage.

I was hoping atleast he would provide the long due justice for his people but what a failure he is though a good man - lost all the credibility what he gained in 1990s in the past few years.

So these guys are supporting a terrorist organisation?

BJP Accuses Centre of Inept Handling of SL Tamils Issue | news.outlookindia.com

Expressing his support for a separate 'Eelam' (homeland) for Tamils in Sri Lanka, Sinha cautioned Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa that his government cannot suppress the demand with repression using the army.

"The history of the world will show that repression has never worked. No people can be subdued with the strength of military, however mighty it be," he said and cited the creation of East Timor, Sudan and Bangladesh.

"I'm sending a message to President Rajapaksa. If you continue along this path of repression and distortion, Tamil Eelam is not far away," Sinha cautioned the neighbouring nation.

Blaming the ceding of Kachchatheevu island to Sri Lanka by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, which, he claimed, was the origin of all problems faced by Indian fishermen, Sinha said "nothing stops India from redrawing the fishing line around Kachchatheevu (an islet in the Palk Straits)."

Demanding that India annul the agreement ceding the islet to Sri Lanka, the senior BJP leader promised to bring a negotiated settlement for the Lankan Tamils in their country if his party was voted to power, apparently to lure the electorate in Tamil Nadu in the next Lok Sabha elections.

 BJP needs to take this message to the electorate in an aggressive manner.

If BJP does this, then it is end of Dravidian politics and start of Hindutva politics in TN and I would not mind that. Infact, I will support it.

As for as Madamji is concerned, I am not sure how much more damage she can cause - She is one reason the reforms has stalled and the growth has slowed down - a foreigner wielding so much power just because she has a surname Gandhi. :hitwall:

If there is a country in this world who has damaged Sri Lanka, it is only India in the recent history. India and Tamilnadu are responsible for training and supporting Tamil terrorists against Sri Lanka. Indian Tamils on PDF who shout against Sri Lanka should not forget it.

You brought the sh!t on yourself by passing racist, discriminatory acts and then using sinhala chauvinists to unleash riots like on Black July.

Looks like you people have not learnt the lesson and still your rulers - like Gothabaya - are using fanatics like the Bodhu Bala Sena to target minorites in a attempt to whip up passion and hide the economic failures in the country.

India should leave Sri Lanka alone. We are now the number 1 ally of Sri Lanka. When India mess with our Sri Lankan brothers, they mess with us too. What happens to our allies in South Asia is now our business too. We are in South Asia to counterbalance Indian thuggery and Indian regime supporting terrorist organisations.
We are with you Sri Lanka.

A third world politician is a third world politician.. And Yaswant Singh is one just like Jayalalitha, Karunanidhi, Vaiko or Mahinda Rajapaksa.. They will sell their mothers to gain a few extra votes.. Elections are coming up next year and the BJP will try and garner few over emotional, illiterate TN votes.. And these silly Madrasi's are having a orgasm over political rhetoric

The same BJP was on the forefront against an anti Lanka resolution in the Indian parliament just weeks ago..Btw Bob Rae is a neo libtard has been living off Toronto tiger money and as a has been was kicked off his arse when he tried to enter Sri Lanka few years ago.. And liberals are not in power anymore the conservatives are..You need to feel pity on these Madrasi's these days clutching on to straws..

It is the BJP leaders who visited the war torn parts of SL (Tamil Dominated areas) and the visit was particularly aimed at rehabilitation of SL Tamils who were affected by the War.

It is wrong to assume that India neglected SL Tamils after arming them, as you said earlier in your posts. GOI has changed the policy of violence to more civilized one.
