India seeks its rightful role on world stage: UN Envoy

DALLAS: Noting that India is acting as a responsible stakeholder in the international system, New Delhi's UN envoy has a made a strong case for a governance architecture that accommodates and acknowledges its contribution and potential.

"If the evolving multilateral world were to truly value India's role and views, there need to be some fundamental developments taking place in the near future," India's Permanent UN Representative Hardeep Singh Puri said in a valedictory speech at the Naveen Jindal School of Management at University of Texas here Friday.

"By any objective criteria such as population, territorial size, GDP, economic potential, civilizational legacy, cultural diversity, political system and past and ongoing contributions to the activities of the UN - especially to UN peacekeeping operations - India is eminently suited for permanent membership of an expanded UN Security Council," he said.

Noting that India has affirmed its willingness and capacity to shoulder the responsibilities and obligations of permanent membership, Puri said reform of the Bretton Woods institutions too have to be undertaken immediately.

"We need a more representative international financial architecture, with an increase in the voice and representation of developing countries," he said.

"The need of the hour is also the establishment of a just international monetary system that serves the interests of all countries. Reform is also badly needed at the World Bank," Puri said.

Acknowledging that there are no objective formulae for calibrating India's efforts, "and a lot will depend on factors over which India has virtually no control," he assured that India will not be found wanting.

"The question is can the international community rise up to the challenge," he asked voicing the hope for "a governance architecture that accommodates and acknowledges India's contribution and potential."

This requires both an attitudinal change as well as structural adjustments to international institutions to better reflect contemporary realities, Puri said.

UN without India as permanent member of UNSC...:hitwall: joke of the century....:argh: UN failed to represent the new world realities... epic fail:hang2:

. . .
G4 should not give a damn about those weak, not so important, jealous countries who makes up this coffee club

.
^Play nice. That arrogance is exactly what's motivating their opposition.

India joining UNSC with veto may seem to be a joke to you (it does to me too) , but what wrong with expanding the UNSC?

We are beyond cold war and WW2 aren't we?

Maybe at some point in the future. But not too soon though.

But back in the past, it was impossible.

.
The world can't ignore a country like India, sooner than later we will play an important part.

India don't even have a thermonuclear weapon.how could they enter the UNSC?

Role on the world stage? Jeeez! How about its more immediate role of alleviating poverty and providing good governance at home first, before thinking big? Right now all the role it can get on the world stage is that of a two bit clown! We've made a laughing stock of ourselves and continue to poodle fake and flounder as we have no foreign policy worth the name.

What does one expect from the present lot of politicos and bureaucrats sitting in their ivory towers busy selling the country to make a fast buck and score political brownie points for personal power and pelf? It's 'kissa kursi ka' all the way and nothing else matters. That seems to be the only policy our ruling class has.

The tragedy is that this country of 1.3 billion souls does't have a single statesman worth the name. Who is that person (or party) who can pull India back from the brink and put it on the road to prosperity? It is only after this that India can think of seeking a role on the world stage and be strong enough to be heard.

Until then all this talk of an emerging super power etc is nothing but poppycock.

Am I being a pessimist? You tell me!

No need to get your panties in a twist guys. Every day India is now devoid of a permanent seat on the UNSC only undermines the authority of the UN even more and makes a fallacy of the entire institution. Not having Japan, India and Germany all more powerful than the UK and France is an utter joke and shows how outdated the UNSC is and the fact it reflects a time that either never was or defeinelty does not exist today. India has many friends in the world and with or without a permanent seat on the UNSC India will become a global power in the next few decades. If the UN fails to act in time this could very well be the straw tht breaks the camels back and we could see the UN collapse like the house of cards it is.

Yeah, one more test in Beijing skies using the Agni-V is deserved and will settle your doubts ..... please evacuate Beijing .... we gonna test.

After all we need to inform you prior to the test .... it's our humble duty.
