If there was any arms race in the region, India has won it, at whatever the cost may be. But the claims to have good neighbourly relations, with MFN-status, no-war pact or no-first-use nuclear arsenal are just a dream seemingly never to come true.

In April this year India yanked open the door of the exclusive ICBM (International Ballistic Missile) club with the first test of Agni-V. Now, if DRDO is to be believed, India has quietly gate-crashed into an even more exclusive club of nuclear-tipped submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs). The most ironic part of this achievement on part of India is that New Delhi had been able to successfully keep it as a secret ‘black project’.

The annual awards function of the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) the other day witnessed Prime Minister Manmohan Singh handing over the “technology leadership award” to a scientist, A K Chakrabarti, of the Hyderabad-based DRDL lab, for the “successful development” of the country’s first SLBM. This capability has been acquired only by four nations, the US, Russia, France and China. Long shrouded in secrecy as a “black project”, unlike the surface-to-surface nuclear missiles like Agni, the SLBM may now finally come out of the closet. Called different names at different developmental phases, which included “Sagarika’’ for an extended period, the SLBM in question is the ‘K-15’ missile with a 750-km strike range. Much like the over 5,000-km Agni-V that will be fully operational by 2015 after four-to-five “repeatable tests”, the K-15 is also still some distance away from being deployed. While the SLBM may be fully-ready and undergoing production now, as DRDO contends after conducting its test several times from submersible pontoons, its carrier INS Arihant will take at least a year before it’s ready for “deterrent patrols”.

India’s first indigenous nuclear-powered submarine, the 6,000-tonne INS Arihant, is still undergoing “harbor-acceptance trials” with all its pipelines being cleared and tested meticulously on shore-based steam before its miniature 83 MW pressurized light-water reactor goes “critical”. The submarine will then undergo extensive “sea-acceptance trials” and test-fire the 10-tonne K-15, which can carry a one-tonne nuclear payload, from the missile silos on its hump.

The sea-based nuclear leg in the shape of SLBMs is much more effective — as also survivable being relatively immune to pre-emptive strikes — than the air or land ones. Nuclear-powered submarines, which are capable of operating silently underwater for months at end, armed with nuclear-tipped missiles are, therefore, considered the most potent and credible leg of the triad. With even the US and Russia ensuring that two-thirds of the strategic warheads they eventually retain under arms reduction agreements will be SLBMs, India with a clear “no-first use” nuclear doctrine needs such survivable second-strike capability to achieve credible strategic deterrence.

SLCM from pak side is also expected to join the picture within few years

Nice to hear that @farhan.

Apart from that what is already stated, are we looking for some sub launched supersonic missiles for the same range.

India is today a world leader in missiles. We now make our own cruse missile turbofans, own ring gyro scopes, aesa radars for tracking. We have now build world class facilities for production and research. We have mastered nuclear propulsion and are building 3 more lines os of nuclear submarines. Our a5 can hit upto 8000km.

What Pakistan has to match us??????

No D!ck measuring Buddy. Waise bhi we South Asians have average sized ones. So no use competing among the lower ones. :P

On Topic : Great achievement. India is undoubtedly getting into the next leauge to the dislike of Pakistan. Its understood. Pakistan has invested so much in Defence to create a minimum inventory to match India. Now even thats not possible due to huge GDP growth of India.

Deewar film ka dialogue yaad aa gaya....."Unke Paas China hai"........

Guys they have many tactical weapons which is our major concern.

I deleted that line. :)

This article talks about race. Letting them know the difference btw the nations.

We dont want war, we should let them know that we want to be a super strong nation and keep friendship with them at the same time. When they see our aircraft carriers and nuclear subs, they fear. But war is not an option anymore. They cant face us and we dont want to face them. Friendship is what we need.

India  Pakistan

Nuke syb probably has nothing to do with pakistan its just to show the world that India too has the capability of developing cutting edge techs..
And SLBM is developed mostly to warn China about our weapon of destructions and formation of nuclear triad..
Pakistan should not worry about nuke subs, they should probably obey the ceasefire..which they have violated once again.. Hope this incidents doesn't bring both nations to another 2001 stand-off..

Our a5 can hit upto 8000km. we have performed space reentry both in missiles and as a space mission for capsules. We have built our own sams of range 40 to 200km which also works as a abm system. Our own long range tracking radar( isreali help appriciated). We have our own bvr of range 100km undergoing trials right now. Our own undegeneous combat helicopter will carry indian anti tank missiles. And now we have a tank with more than 70% Indian compenents.

We are building 60 ships right now in mostly India and some foreign ports. Most of our ships have either Indian or liscence produced weapons. only 10-15% equipment in imported like engine and some electronics.

There is no race. Dont even think of one with India. India is heading toward a different league. Dont mess with us.
Accept our mfn status and let us invest. Otherwise all the listed stuff will be faced by Pakistai forces. :P

Oh you hear that? I hear a rant and It sounds like I didn't give a ****...

Yup hopefully they get it through their brain. But in Pakistan military is very influential, when India builds these things Pakistani generals start to also crave these toys. If Indians have it why dont we. And hence the game goes on and on.

Thats what we Indians want. Dont give a **** about weapons, give us the Mfn status.

LOL. Dumb article written in some nationalist blog... Indians would jump their ***** off if I post some other 'articles' from 'pakideology.com' , the main source of this crap article indians are jumping on.

But good...gullible indians have now no problem with this....indian sites are posting this blog of some unknown kid as "Pakistan's perspective"

Pakistan was never concerned about India's all these developments. As long as we have "minimum credible deterrence" against indians , we are o.k!

Naval version of Babur cruise missile is already in the making...and...remember U.S accusation that Pakistan has modified harpoon missiles and made them "nuclear capable , land-attack missiles" ...and Pakistan responded "The missile tested was not Harpoon , but Pakistan's own missile" ;)

We will just develop a strategic deterrent at the sea too....simple as that.

India can't even think of going to war with Pakistan...we all know that.

Oh you hear that? I hear a rant and It sounds like I didn't give a ****...

Let these kids have little fun...Afterall , it makes them feel good.

. . . . .India can't even think of going to war with Pakistan...we all know that.
Initially the post was low in the middle it sounded logical but the last line killed it.

Any explanations why would India wanna go war with Pakistan ?? We are not land hungry.

I have no qualms with giving India the MFN status, heck I support reconciliatory effort and believe that both nations stand a lot to gain a lot from co-operation, but if friendship has to come through intimidation and ridicule (your post in question) then I would much rather spend my life as an undernourished enemy than a well-fed slave.

Another Indo-Pak war is highly unlikely, if we did need to go to war, 1999, 2001 and 2008 were good excuses, however the nuclear capability of both nations (coupled with Pakistan's leap first, look later image) has proven effective in deterring conflict.
