India, Russia may join hands for stealth fighter
30 Dec

NEW DELHI: India is finalising plans for a fifth-generation stealth fighter jet, which will have a lethal mix of beyond-visual range combat capabilities, reduced radar tracking signature, super-manoeuvrability and supersonic cruising ability.

A detailed presentation on the futuristic fifth-generation fighter project was made to defence minister A K Antony on Friday by a high-level team of officials from defence ministry, Indian Air Force and Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL), said sources.

India is likely to collaborate with Russia in this multi-billion dollar programme since it's still to completely master the technology behind the manufacture of advanced fighter jets despite the ongoing indigenous Tejas Light Combat Aircraft project.

The presentation to Antony, which was led by secretary (defence production) K P Singh and included HAL chairman Ashok Baweja, comes barely a month before Russian President Vladimir Putin comes to India. Russia has been hard-selling its fifth-generation fighter project to India for some years now since it desperately needs some infusion of funds in its programme touted to be a rival to the American F-35 Lighting-II Joint Strike Fighter project.

The two main Russian aviation majors, MIG Corporation and Sukhoi Design Bureau, submitted their plans for joint development of the fifth-generation fighter with HAL in end-November.

"Both presented their concept papers and blueprints about the aircraft configuration, workshare in co-development and cost of development. India might make the choice of its partner public during Putin's visit," said a source.

The most potent fighters in India's combat fleet at present are the Sukhoi-30MKI "air dominance" fighters, being manufactured indigenously by HAL now under transfer of technology from Russia, which can be placed a little over fourth-generation fighters.

Incidentally, HAL has been directed by Cabinet Committee on Security to "compress" the manufacture of 140 Sukhoi-30MKIs by three years to finish the project by 2013-2014, instead of the original 2017-2018.

Sources said the fifth-generation fighter, likely to be developed with Russia, will be "50% to 100% superior" to Sukhoi-30MKI in terms of "avionics, radius of turn, accuracy of weapon delivery and other combat capabilities".

The only operational fifth-generation fighter in the world as of now is the new American F/A-22 Raptor, the most expensive combat jet in history, priced as it is at $258 million apiece.

Fourth-generation fighters like MiG-29s, F-15 Eagles, F-16 Fighting Falcons, F\A-18 Hornets and Mirage-2000s were developed from 1970 onwards, with superior avionics for multi-role capabilities than previous jets. The intermediate stage between them and the fifth-generation fighters is represented by Sukhoi-30MKIs, F/A-18 E/F Super Hornets, F-16F Desert Falcons, Eurofighter Typhoons, Rafales and the like.

Now I'm thoroughly confused. Which stealth fighter are they referring to? The PAK-FA, MCA or is it a new third MiG fighter?

Wow, speaking like they are so close!

It's a good move. A smart move. Nothing heroic. Pay the Russians to do it. Sounds like a third plane, so they'll make a new one.

Mate, count out the MCA. I dont want to see it developed right now, i think we should get a proper 5th gen fighter and then develop MCA, not keep MCA as our frontline plane, as we'r yet to develop LCA. MCA is a distant dream.

Its either the T-50 or the MiG fighter. Either way, the frequency and mention of 5th gen fighters is growing in the IAF, and there is no smoke without fire. I think something is definitely afoot, and hopefully, it will be done during Putin's visit.

All im glad is that atleast the IAF and MoD is taking the 5th gen figher development seriously at this stage, rather than thinking about it 15 years from now, when the MKi will already be a faded plane like the MiG 21.

Hopefully we will see some tangible results during Putin's visit. Loads of things are hanging till that time including the MRTA. Which is nothing short of a life saver for the IAF, which is reeling from operating SO many types of inefficient transport planes, of vintage design and very limited capacity. The MRTA will streamline that, and offer a top-of-the-line solution. Plus it will be a tremendous boost to the Indo-Russia relations, which are bound to come in stress in due time as the MRCA contract comes near.

Mate, count out the MCA. I dont want to see it developed right now,
i guess that makes u manmohan singh.:partay:

when is he coming??

NEW DELHI. 26 Jan 2007. President Vladimir Putin is guest of honor at India's 58th Republic Day celebration. Reflects renewed India-Russia ties

NEW DELHI. 26 Jan 2007. President Vladimir Putin will share the podium with President Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam and the country's political and military brass when India shows off its weaponry at the annual parade marking one of the country's main national days. Putin will see Sukhoi-30 MKI fighter jets and other Russian military hardware in the display. He is visiting with a 300-strong team of Russian government and industry figures, many of whom arrived on Jan 12, to boost the long-standing political, military and trade alliance with India.

Russia and India are BRIC countries. The term is used by investment companies to refer to Brazil, Russia, India, and China, which they view as the world's largest rapidly developing countries. Indian opposition to a pending US deal with Pakistan for US $1 billion-worth of arms and the apparent reluctance in the United States Congress to share nuclear technology with India is said to be encouraging New Delhi to boost its links with Russia.

According to Indian and Russian newswires, India and Russia, traditional military partners, have set the target of doubling their trade to US $10 billion by 2010. India's NDTV reported in December that the country intends to order 300 T-90 tanks in Russia. The contract budget will reach US $866 million and the delivery is to be made within two years.

The Indian president traditionally addresses the nation on Republic Day. In 2007 the address is likely to include a progress report on Vision 2020, a program for transforming India into a developed nation before 2020. In his 2006 speech the President stressed the country should give highest priority for treatment of HIV/AIDS and accelerate the development of effective anti-vaccine for certain types of HIV before 2007. There is likely to be a reference to progress with that goal and deadline.

but ofcourse, Pakistan is too cool for stealth fighters, so we dont need one.....and no one cares what India does, since its going to take a long time for them to even build one (remember the Arjun MBT?)

No AF has any use for coolness.

and no one cares what India does, since its going to take a long time for them to even build one (remember the Arjun MBT?)
Since, the PAF is going to be going up against the IAF in case of a conflict, it will be foolishness to ignore what the IAF is acquiring. And did you forget the Russian part in the building of the stealth fighter?

vnomad, no point in enlightening some one who is ignorant enough to post what he did in the post saying, Pakistan is too 'cool' for stealth fighters. Really.

Sorry to burst ur bubble man but do u think we are sleeping we always believed in quality vs UR QUANTITY so bro remember
arjun we made alkhalid
Tejas=F17
u went for a nuke sub = 3 U 214 subs
su 30 =we went for more F16C/D,J11B
same goes for ur PAKFA AND
IN PAKISTAN WE DONT JOKE ABOUT MILITARY BUDGET WE GET WHAT WE WANT
:sniper::pakistan:

India has a bigger budget and so it can afford to make mistakes. I am only aware of two countries that makes all the products indigenously and never has any mishaps or problems! May be they are creed of another planet because even the most powerful country has problems in its arms development process.

arjun we made alkhalid
Arjun tank is built by Indians. alkhalid is built by with co-operation with China by Pakistan.

Tejas=F17
Tejas again is built by India, wheras F17 is built by China and tweaked a bit for Pakistan. Morever, F17 has Russian engines that prevent it from assembling in Pakistan.

u went for a nuke sub = 3 U 214 subs

Nuke sub was an indigenous program and we were successful in it. India has built one true nuclear sub. Whereas, Pakistan acquired diesel submarines.

su 30 =we went for more F16C/D,J11B
You talked about quality and you compare Su-30 MKI vs F16's. Give me a break!

same goes for ur PAKFA AND

My friend, there is nothing in the world that can be compared to F22. India/Russian joint programme is building one! Pakistan is far from it. Pakistan is acquiring 3/4 th gen plane whereas India is contemplating 5th gen plane. A big difference you see!

IN PAKISTAN WE DONT JOKE ABOUT MILITARY BUDGET WE GET WHAT WE WANT
:sniper::pakistan:

Indians have 30b$ in defence budget whereas Pakistan has only 4b$ - a vast difference. Indian military is also not fighting insurgency in terms proportional to Pakistani military is doing i.e. we are not spending money to move troops/hardware from one part to another to fight against Taliban, we are adding to the capacity.

I dont understand what part of "GET WHAT WE WANT" - you mean? Pakistan's only reliable supplier is China - which has less technological advanced planes and only sold to countries that are either unable to or dont have access to get Western/Russian planes. I mean quality!

India's conventional military superiority is well-known w.r.t to Pakistan. Both in quality and quantity terms, India has more capabilities w.r.t to Pakistan.

do u have any idea , what r u talking abt ?
spend some time in this awesome forum and u'll know. BTW,

#0. We have T90 compared to AlKhalid,

#1.
India has 100+ MKI , Pak has NONE ( Operational ) JF17 or J11/J10 ; Nor any Blk 52s as of NOW.
by the time you would get that, India would have a parallel Induction of MRCA and Soon Get FGFA, which PAK CANNOT get atleast 10-15 After India gets the same.

#2.
Can 3 Horses = 1 Elephant... Any Logic in the comparision ?
214 are Attack Subs , INS Arihant is a Stratagic Weapon
YOU cant build a Nuclear Sub mate, There is NO Technlogical base for it as of now.

#3. You wont see a 5th gen Fighter in PAF bef 2030. WHY?
read the forum. u'll know.

In the time of war...these expensive aircrafts won't come to your help(India)...having atomic bombs...can keep your enemies scared..not to carry out any evil plan as far as war is concerned whether its about India/China or Pakistan/India.
