India, Russia may build supercomputer to rival China's Tianhe-2
BANGALORE: Russian supercomputing company RSC group and the Russian Academy of Sciences have proposed collaboration with India to set up advanced supercomputing facilities that will rival China's Tianhe-2, the world's fastest supercomputer.

"India has many skills for building supercomputers. It is very strong in software," said Alexey Shmelev, co-founder and chief operations officer of RSC group and delegate to the Russian Academy of Sciences. "I am ready to share technology with India. I guess there would not be many players who are willing to do so."

In a letter last month, Boris Shabanov of the Russian Academy of Sciences has invited a delegation from the Indian Institute of Science and the Karnataka government to explore the possibility of a supercomputing centre in Bangalore.

CNR Rao, a Bharat Ratna awardee who heads the scientific advisory council to the prime minister, said it is difficult to assess a potential collaboration right away, but was of the view that "the Chinese are way ahead".

Tianhe-2, developed by China's National University of Defense Technology, retained its position as the world's number one system according to TOP500 project which ranks the most powerful computer systems in the world. It beat Titan, a US supercomputer which briefly held the world speed crown. India's supercomputer Param Yuva-II is ranked at 83 while Russia's Lomonosov supercomputer is ranked at 37.

If the joint cooperation between Russia and India is found viable, it can result in a computing system as big as a basketball court that can perform approximately as many operations per second as several million personal computers.

In 2009, India had taken a huge leap in supercomputing with EKA which was then the fourth fastest supercomputer in the world and fastest in Asia. "But in the next few years, China took over and it has retained its position as the world's number one system," said Vipin Chaudhary, former chief executive of Computational Research Laboratories, a subsidiary of Tata Sons that built the EKA supercomputer.

It is already on the plan.

India plans 61 times faster supercomputer by 2017 - The Times of India

That's Cool. We've got Software superiority and Russia's got Hardware superiority, So mix 'em both we get best of all supercomputers

@Srinivas There's a question in my mind. And it is that how come China builds everything from a pin to plane so fast than other countries, cause i've felt so even US couldn't do it so faster.

LOL, Found this comment in TOI Comment section:

Super Computer speed reserved 50% for SC/ST, 10% for Muslims, 10% OBC, 30% for Politicians !!!
:omghaha:

Chinese are the factory of world and they manufactured all the components and they have the expertise in copying, pirating and all.

Still Chinese claims are dubious but they do have some technologies which are well and good but largely inferior to the West.

No more collaborations with russia. They take our money, don't let use help, and then attach our name as a footnote.

Glad some Indians get it. Nobody gives you anything of worth, easily. Spend your money on your own researchers and gain expertise by yourself. It might take longer but better in the long run when you can do things all on your own.

Both the Russian Lomonosov supercomputer and the Chinese Tianhe-2 supercomputer (and others) uses banks of Intel Xeon processors.

Right now its just a race of who can string the most with the best architecture.

I wonder if Intel has black project chip designs that they aren't selling overseas...

You are correct!!

But for India or Russia to design a processor on its own with 15 nm technology and that can beat intel will take time.

Right now India is heading in that direction, may be in a decade or so India will be able to design and manufacture its own processors and other semiconductor devices.

GOI has given nod to establish two semiconductor manufacturing plants in India.

You think we will be standing still the whole time? :P

Tianhe-2 is only the beginning, we are building up momentum to go much much further.

Or else CCP will come up with some manipulated stats related to super computers .....

Fastest Super Computer !!! Good for China

I think we should focus on our needs than record !!! If current Indian Super computers are meeting our need no need to allot national resources just for record. Planning for future is good though. Private players can do that if they want

India is way head in software technology than Russia.Russians need that critical tech. But they had hardware. It is a 50-50 situation.

You don't have a supercomputer that ranks in the top 40, yet you feel the need to slander the current reigning champion, and post cheap speculation about how you can leapfrog to the top on the back of a Russian system (if Russia provides the hardware and India provides the paintjob, is it Russo-Indian collaboration )? If it makes you feel better, you already rank no. 1 in something: the most delusional poster with the most transparent inferiority complex on this forum.

China is also working on their own processors for the next Gen, until then they will be using Intel, so they are not sitting idle.

I think this is a good field where China, india and russians should work together to develop a powerful Processor rival to Intel.

India is in top 5 until recently!!

To tell you ..... Super computer is one thing that no country would like to reveal the actual capabilities .... May be CCP thought that this is like Olympic race and gave away the real specs ......

if I am delusional why are you quoting me ?? ......

There is a truth in my posts that is hurting your kind of propaganda machines ....
