Rostec State Corporation expects to sign a deal for supplying 48 Mi-17V-5 helicopters to the Indian armed forces, soon.

A commercial proposal has been presented to the Indian side earlier this February and after the commercial terms are agreed upon, a firm order is expected to be received this year, the company announced Friday.

In 2008-2015, Rosoboronexport, a company of Rostec State Corporation had already supplied a total of 151 units of the Mi-17V-5, produced by the Kazan Helicopter Plant of Russian Helicopters.

"The negotiations within this contact have been launched. Currently the Indian side is considering our commercial proposal, which we sent earlier this month. As you know, recently we completed deliveries under a previous contract for 151 units of Mi-17V-5. Over a long time, Russian helicopters have gained a reputation for being very efficient and reliable machines and the intention of the Indian army to purchase a new batch of Mi-17V-5 is proof of that. Since this is not the first contract for these helicopters, we assume that the negotiations will not take a long time: the technical specifications and parameters have been agreed, the two parties will only have to agree upon the commercial terms. It is not just about price, which is affected by inflation, but also the order and timing of deliveries and payments. I am sure that the contract will be concluded this year, perhaps even in a few months. India has long been and remains our strategic partner, and we intend to maintain our leading position in the helicopter sector and increase Rostec's presence in the region." said Sergei Chemezov, CEO of Rostec State Corporation.

151+48 medium class helos - a MASSIVE order and not a single one made in India and yet Airbus Military is ready to start producing the EC-725 in India, at some point these babus have to start thinking beyond the bottom line (unit price).

Issue was soon after the 26/11 attack there was a panic that we lacked vital equipment including these choppers and we rushed to place orders with Russia and Israel. Now it's a bit late to start producing them at home but I feel these are the last batch we are going to order.

:flame:
Agreed there! Maybe if India bought Russia though, these would then fall under MII?
Considering their present economic woes, it could come at an acceptable bargain?
:chilli:

And meanwhile in China, this is coming out :

Ah, babus & procurements! Almost as funny as a Monty Python sketch ...

The reason could be because of the tardiness on display by the home-grown facility, difficulty in absorbing tech, cost of ToT, protracted time frames and quality concerns.

While make in India is a wonderful initiative, Indian Defence Industry has to go through painful cycle of transformation from their current bumbling or yet better as @Taygibay described farcical conduct to an efficient and well oiled system.

One has to divide the needs in terms of time frames - Critical acquisitions can be off the shelf, necessary ones with some offsets and assembly in India and aspirational ones cane be 100% Indian with full ToT or domestic R&D.

The other thing I would lay emphasis on is Start Small. Instil a culture of efficiency and target bound practices first and later take on herculean project. In my opinion development and capacity enhancement of Small Arms Systems, Kits for Soldiers, Ammunitions, Armoured Vehicles etc should be perfected in house.

You should seperate the decsion making failures from the capabilties of the Indian defence industry.

I have no doubt that many Indian private entities could have made the Mi-17 V5s in India had this option been explored by the GoI.

TATA advanced systems makes a lot of sub assemblies already for aviation giants such as Boeing, Lockhead Martin, Airbus, Sikorsky, RUAG etc:
