KARACHI (updated on: December 23, 2009, 12:38 PST): India on Wednesday has refused to receive 100 fishermen to be released today from Pakistani jail, Aaj News reported.

According to the channel, Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani, as a humanitarian gesture, ordered to release 100 Indian fishermen who have been in Pakistani custody in Landhi jail, but Indian authorities refused to take back the released fishermen due to which the return of fishermen has been delayed.

Indian authorities are of the view that they are not ready to take back the fishermen at this point of time, hence the process should be postponed. The released fishermen chanted anti-Indian slogans after the authorities refused to receive them. India has once again jeopardized the peace process by giving the recent orders of not receiving the fishermen.

India refutes Pak media reports on repatriation of fishermen

India on Wednesday night refuted Pakistani media reports that the delay in the repatriation of 100 Indian fishermen, released by that country was due to a "request made by India".
While welcoming the release and hoping that the remaining Indian fishermen in Pakistani custody will also be allowed to go at the earliest, the Foreign Office here issued a statement, detailing the process involved in the repatriation of these fishermen.

"The High Commission of India received the formal communication in this regard from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan late evening on 22 December 2009.

"While welcoming the release of the fishermen, the High Commission immediately requested the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan to forward the list of the fishermen who were to be released. The list was made available at 1230 hrs on 23 December 2009," it said.

It also said the "arrangements to receive fishermen, together with completion of necessary formalities are underway and will be completed expeditiously".

The release of Pakistani fishermen in Indian custody, whose nationality has been verified by the Pakistani High Commission in India, is also being processed, the statement said.

India welcomes Pakistan's release of 100 Indian fishermen, denies delay

/Islamabad, Dec 23 (IANS) Denying reports of a delay in accepting 100 Indian fishermen released by Pakistan, India Wednesday welcomed the decision and underlined that arrangements were being made to receive them. New Delhi also asked Islamabad to expedite the repatriation at the earliest of the remaining Indian fishermen in its custody.

Setting the record straight, Indian External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Vishnu Prakash said the Indian High Commission in Islamabad received the formal communication in this regard from Pakistan's foreign affairs ministry late Tuesday evening.

While welcoming the release of the fishermen, the High Commission immediately requested Pakistan's foreign ministry to forward the list of those who were to be released, Prakash added.

The list was made available only at 12.30 p.m. Wednesday, he pointed out.

'Arrangements to receive the fishermen, together with completion of necessary formalities, are underway and will be completed expeditiously,' the spokesperson said. 'It is hoped that the remaining Indian fishermen in custody in Pakistan will also be released at the earliest,' he added.

The release of Pakistani fishermen in Indian custody, whose nationality has been verified by the Pakistani High Commission in India, is also being processed, the spokesperson said.

Earlier, reports in the Pakistani media said India was reluctant to receive its fishermen and Indian officials had requested the Pakistan government to postpone the departure of the 100 Indian fishermen as full arrangements had not been made so far.

According to Hirala Shiyal, president of the Porbander-based National Fishworkers Forum (NFF), over 600 Indian fishermen are languishing in Pakistani jails for the last three years.

KARACHI: A Pakistani prison official Wednesday accused India of delaying his country’s plans to release 100 Indian fishermen by failing to make timely travel arrangements for them.
Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani ordered Pakistan to hand over the fishermen on Christmas Eve as a ‘gesture’ to its rival, more than a year after relations seriously deteriorated following the Mumbai attacks.
The South Asian neighbours frequently seize each other’s fishermen, accusing them of violating their respective zones in the Arabian Sea.

Prison authorities in the southern port city of Karachi invited journalists to attend a send-off ceremony for the Indians but the detainees were instead told they would not be leaving as planned, an AFP photographer said.
‘The Indian government has informed the Pakistani interior ministry that they could not make arrangements to receive the fishermen on December 24,’ the deputy superintendent of Karachi jail, Shakir Shah, told AFP.
‘They said a new date will be communicated very soon,’ he said.
Pakistani witnesses said some of the detainees chanted slogans against their government, saying they were ‘disheartened’ by the news.
Authorities in Pakistan estimate that nearly 200 Pakistani fishermen are languishing in Indian jails. Indian authorities say nearly 500 Indian fishermen are in Pakistani prisons.
In the past, the two countries have periodically released hundreds of detained fishermen in prisoner exchanges.
But relations between New Delhi and Islamabad plummeted after 166 people were killed in attacks on Mumbai in November last year which India blamed on Pakistani gunmen. —AFP

India, Pak get in a tangle over release of fishermen

NEW DELHI: A public relations battle is brewing between India and Pakistan over imprisoned fishermen.

Over the past few months, Indian officials have been haranguing their Pakistani counterparts to release around 600 Indian prisoners in Pakistani jails as a humanitarian gesture, even though there was little diplomatic contact.

Late Tuesday evening, the Pakistani foreign ministry said they would release 100 of these prisoners, and they would do it on Christmas eve. It was announced as a humanitarian gesture but India was not ready to receive the prisoners. This became a media event in Pakistan that India was refusing to take back its citizens even though Pakistan was willing to release them.

Refuting Pakistani media reports, the foreign ministry said in a statement that India only received a list of the released prisoners on Wednesday afternoon, so it wasn't able to organise the logistics in time. It added that India would be ready to receive the prisoners within a couple of days. "Arrangements to receive fishermen, together with completion of necessary formalities, are underway and will be completed expeditiously. It is hoped that the remaining Indian fishermen in custody in Pakistan will also be released at the earliest," the statement said.

India will also be releasing a list of Pakistani prisoners, only those whose nationalities have been confirmed and verified by Pakistani authorities. India has verified identities of over 550 Indian prisoners and wants Pakistan to return all of them. "The release of Pakistani fishermen in Indian custody, whose nationality has been verified by the Pakistani High Commission in India, is also being processed," the foreign ministry said.

Pakistan hands over 100 fishermen to India

The Indian fishermen have been released on the order of Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani as a gesture of goodwill.

Out of the 100, body of one fisherman, 50-year-old Sukkan Koma was sent back after his death due to cancer at the jail on Friday morning. Koma was arrested for illegal fishing in Pakistani waters in 2006.

Meanwhile, a social organisation Saibaan International claimed that it bore all expenditure incurred for the fishermen’s transportation from Karachi to Lahore, besides giving 200 Indian rupees each to the released fishermen.
