India provides Afghanistan with 'military aid'

Question
What military equipment is India supplying to Afghanistan?
If it is small light fire arms, tactical gear, mortars etc than its nothing revolutionary. But if the Indians are going to supply Afghanistan with heavy weapons such as artillery, gunships etc. Now that will be a game changer.
Tanks and heavy artillery are in discussion along with gunships.

Post 2014, Afghanistan will become the side-show as a prelude to the main event, which will be Pakistan.

Only time will tell what happens in Afghanistan. So far Pakistan has taken the right decisions by keeping the 'winning aces' in its pocket. It hasn't used them, it is keeping those cards for a later stage. Why do you think PA has been so patient with ANA despite its constant fingering.

India is still not in a position right now to use Afghanistan as a base to destabilize Pakistan for perpetuity. They were lucky enough to piggyback on American efforts in the beginning. But now since the Americans are packing up, they are initiating stabilizing factors to try and create peace in Afghanistan. Indian efforts to destabilize Balochistan and FATA is against US interests, and it is something that will not be encouraged by Americans. So the Indians will either have to pay up or shut up. So far what the Indians have put forward is puny change, it won't buy them much influence in Afghanistan. If they want to continue their activities, they will have to drastically increase their aid to Afghanistan.

That will be a 'Game Changer'.

Even the Americans have avoided giving the Afghans these sophisticated weapons. I wonder how NATO will react if the Indians do decide to supply these weapons to Afghanistan. This will be a huge commitment from the Indian side because not only will India have to supply these weapons, it will have to supply the infrastructure to support these sophisticated platforms. The ANA can barely keep its utility chopper fleet airworthy, they will require extensive assistance to operate Gunships.

Well, 2013 is more than half over, and 2014 won't take that long either. What happens in the entire region will soon be quite evident, wouldn't you agree?

India will never be in a position to destabilise Pakistan from Afghanistan. If anybody thinks otherwise, they are living in fool's paradise.

Indian efforts to destabilize Balochistan and FATA is against US interests, and it is something that will not be encouraged by Americans.
Indian interests do not get defined by American interests. 2014 is crucial. For 2 reasons. A new government will come in to power. Even if the UPA (congress) comes to power, it will be under a new PM. MMS is the softest PM, India has had in a long time. Secondly, the Indian establishment is looking keenly at Kashmir. Let me assure you, if trouble brews in Kashmir, both governments (UPA or NDA) will take an aggressive covert policy vis-a-vis Balochistan and Sindh. All the concerned people in the establishment believe, that there should be a disproportionate cost levied, in case there is an increase in moral support in relevant places.

So the Indians will either have to pay up or shut up. So far what the Indians have put forward is puny change, it won't buy them much influence in Afghanistan. If they want to continue their activities, they will have to drastically increase their aid to Afghanistan.

Indian influence in Afghanistan is not the lynch pin of our strategy to contain Pakistan. Our objective is to ensure anti-India capacities are not built in Afghanistan. Our interests are economic and increased co-operation with the Afghans to reduce the possibility of an anti-India stance from their territory. Pro-India need not mean anti-Pakistan. If the Taliban come to power and ask us to leave, we do exactly that.

The most potent weapon, which, may get delivered will be the Dhruv or the Rudra. Anything beyond this will require extensive ground infrastructure. Tanks and fighters are way beyond the scope now. But, if there was a wish list, I would suggest handing over a couple of squadrons of the LCA to keep HAL happy and build the Afghan AF. But, this is a remote possibility in my dreams.

Practically, I do not advocate weapons systems to Afghanistan from India. Guns, mortars, trucks, utility choppers and other logistical capabilities, yes. We should restrict ourselves to hospitals, schools, infrastructure and telecom.

We are with Afganistan for their fight with pak sponser Taliban

Really? That's great! How about you take on those millions of Afghan refugees that are burdening Pakistan's economy.

.
The Afghans need all the help that they can get, real change has happened on the ground - small industries, offices, children specially girls going to school, women going to work, The Afghans will not let this change be taken away by the Taliban and neither will the international community.

cosmetic changes, and I say that because out side of Kabul and a few other cities, none of those things exist. Even women's rights issues are only being tolerated by the Afghan gov. Mark my words, after US forces leave, the current Afghan gov will do exactly what the Taliban did.

We are no where near that position where Pakistan faces a real existential threat from the West. The ANA Officer Core is incapable of even organizing a defensive posture, let alone carry out offensive operations against a well trained foe such as PA. If even at the height of its power, the ANA was routed out by local tribesman and FC, what makes you think the situation is going to be any different today?

The Indians still have minuscule presence in Afghanistan. Training a few officers here and there and providing some measly funds is not going to buy them the influence they are expecting to receive. NATO spends about $80 billion a month in Afghanistan, the Indians in their deluded mind think that they will gain the same influence by only spending a total of $2 billion. Why do you think the Indians are dead scared about the Taliban coming back to power? All that money spent will go down to waste if the Taliban even manage to gain control of any major districts.

The Afghans need Pakistan a lot more than Pakistan needs Afghanistan. The Afghans know that Pakistan's patience will only go so far. Pakistan has the ability to starve Afghanistan, make matters worse for it by cutting off trade and sending back all the Afghans residing in Pakistan. How do you think the Afghans will cope if Pakistan cuts of all trade and sends back an exodus of 3 million people. Pakistan also has the ability to mine the entire border with Afghanistan to achieve security on its borders, but has so far restrained from it.

Its quite clear that Taliban are not going to come back in power anytime soon. But there war machinery is intact, and they still hold huge political sway in the country because they still command loyalty of the Pushtuns whom make up almost 50% of the country. Its not just a coincidence that Taliban control almost 50% of the country. NATO and Karzai are making the same mistake the Soviets made, concentrating on the cities instead of winning over the countryside which makes up about 80% of Afghanistan.

The ANA get 12billion dollars as aid annually

if i correctly remember than by 2015 USA plans to even cut the aid to israel by 60% let alone afghanistan.

there GDP is only 20billion dollars.and i was checking out the imf prediction for afghanistan.as per imf there gdp will reach 189billion dollars in 2060.

so if we take 22billion dollar gdp as 2015 benchmark.than there budget for ANA would be around 500million..
which is more like the budget of our police.even managing the bullets for 350k troops with 500millions would be a tough task.for a country where not a single weapon is made at locally.

Pakistan had a troops strength of only 3lac in 80's with a gdp of 50billion dollars.so either they will decrease the strength to about 1lac or not pay the soldiers

Our own army is deficient in Arty.. What will we provide the same to Afg??
We are already not using what we have, May be ANA will use it. At least they respond way sooner than us.

Our army has to wait from this stupid govt.

NEW DELHI, Aug 12 (KUNA)-- India announced on Monday that it is providing security assistance to the Afghan forces.

Indian Defense Minister AK Antony told the parliament that India has signed a Strategic Partnership Agreement (SPA) with Afghanistan on October 4, 2011. He noted that this agreement provides security cooperation between the two countries.

Under the SPA, India has agreed to assist, as mutually determined, in the training, equipping, and capacity building programs for Afghan National Security Forces, he explained. He added that India's assistance to Afghanistan in the defense sector is based upon specific requests from the Government of the latter.

Afghanistan government and people should ask the US to leave most of its weapons it has used in Afghanistan and train the Afghan security forces on those weapons or else, not a single base and not even one soldier should be allowed to stay there.
And as it is for India, it sounds a little bit strange that Afghanistan should count on India in its military security, it is too obvious that it is a western US led policy to counter the Pakistan China relations.
Iran will be a better option for Afghanistan, education , socio-economics and military security wise in the long run.
